'Sex and the City': Carrie's Infamous Fart Scene Took Several Takes Because Sarah Jessica Parker Kept Breaking Character

Sex and the City is a comedy-drama series that debuted on HBO in the late nineties. Based on the popular book by Candace Bushnell, the show became intensely popular with thousands of viewers and ultimately ran for six seasons before going off the air. The characters and situations presented in Sex and the City have become iconic, and to this day, many fans identify themselves based on certain characters, asking each other if they are a Carrie or a Samantha. The behind-the-scenes stories have also become legend, with one particular anecdote from season one standing out as particularly hilarious.

Sarah Jessica Parker rose to fame on ‘Sex and the City’

Sarah Jessica Parker began her career on the stage, acting and singing in a variety of theater productions. Parker eventually transitioned her talents to television and film, appearing in movies such as Hocus Pocus, Footloose, Honeymoon in Vegas, and Ed Wood.

Parker made a name for herself as a comedic actress, but major fame eluded her until 1998 when she began portraying Carrie Bradshaw in the new HBO series Sex and the City.

In the show, Parker ran the gamut of emotions from week to week, revealing the highs and lows in the life of the famously-single New York City-based writer. Parker was beloved by fans for her incredible fashion choices on the show, as well as for the vulnerability that she imbued the character of Carrie Bradshaw with.

Critics also recognized Parker’s work, and she earned several major award nominations for her acting on the series. She has gone on to work in many other projects, from stage to television, and is even the curator of several fashion lines, including shoes and fine fragrances. Still, most fans still know her best as Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City

‘Sex and the City’ is an iconic TV show

Sex and the City ran from 1998 until 2004, with a staggering ninety-four episodes that aired during that time. The show explored many subjects during its run, from promiscuity to safe sex practices, and it is widely credited with opening up conversations between women about working, motherhood, and friendship.

After the series ended in 2004, the cast returned for two major motion pictures, Sex and the City, released in 2008, and Sex and the City 2, which was released in 2010. In spite of the two movies, many fans still prefer the series as proof of the show’s innovative aspects. To this day, many fans pine for another sequel or reunion of some sort, although it seems unlikely that showrunners will ever be able to unite the original cast again.

What did Sarah Jessica Parker say about Carrie’s fart scene?

The first season of Sex and the City was magical for many reasons. The cast had a lot of fun behind the scenes, and according to an interview with Parker, it was her laughter that actually kept disrupting one of the first season’s most memorable scenes.

The scene involved Carrie farting when she is in bed with Mr. Big. As Parker later revealed, she wasn’t the one responsible for the sound. In fact, it was a dolly grip referred to as “Joe Dolly.” Parker also stated that: “The scene took many takes because I kept laughing and I was really embarrassed.”

Sex and the City will continue to live on in reruns as well as in fans’ imaginations, and even many years down the road, it will undoubtedly remain both relevant and entertaining.
