Ant-Man and The Wasp‘s comedic caper serves as an antidote to the grim, universe-shaking events of Avengers: Infinity War, and its main narrative steers well away from Thanos’ invasion storyline.
However, observant fans have spotted an Easter egg that could serve as a hint of what’s coming in Avengers 4.
We find Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) about to complete two years of house arrest after he used the Ant-Man technology to help Steve Rogers during Captain America: Civil War. Stuck at home, Scott has learned some new tricks from a series of videos from ‘Online Close-Up Magic University’.
We see him watching one video in which the magician teacher speaks some suspiciously fateful words:
“Snap your fingers. That gets them to look over there. Now that is misdirection. Easy-peasy.”
The image of snapping fingers looms large in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the moment, as it was with a click of his Infinity Gauntlet-wrapped fingers that Thanos erased half the population of the universe in Infinity War.
It could just be a sneaky reference – an in-joke – but maybe it could hint at things to come? Maybe Thanos’ action was a trick somehow – a “misdirection”, as the magician says.
Could we have a Leftovers-style situation, where the ‘dead’ characters live on in a parallel universe? Are they trapped in the Soul Stone, as has been theorised? Or could Thanos have some larger scheme involving the missing people that will be revealed in Avengers 4?
Or it could just be a nod to Scott having to trick the FBI in order to help Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). But that would be awfully mundane in comparison, wouldn’t it?
The other prevailing theory for Avengers 4 is that Thanos’ actions will be undone by time-travel – another theory supported by the events of Ant-Man and The Wasp. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until 2019 to find out.
