Getting involved with Tubbs again was never going to end well for Martin Fowler (James Bye) in EastEnders and, this Christmas, he is set to face a fresh disaster as a job he carries out with the shady associate ends badly – and could leave his life in ruins. Pictures have previously been revealed which show a gun toting Martin take Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) hostage – but what brings them to this point?
With Sonia’s (Natalie Cassidy) suspicions already sky high, she confronts Martin about what is going on but, determined to meet Tubbs for their planned job, a stressed out Martin barges past her.
Meanwhile, Bex (Jasmine Armfield) is hurt when she approaches her dad to thank him for helping fix her car and he dismisses her. Blaming herself and her mental health struggle for Martin going off the rails, a dejected Bex opens up to Sonia and seeing her daughter hurt by Martin’s actions are the last straw.
In the wake of carrying out their job, Martin and Tubbs end up in a serious situation which could have massive ramifications and Martin is left haunted by what he does. Sonia and Bex are concerned by his demeanour but Martin wants to cover up the evidence and Tubbs warns him to get rid of the van and quick.
Martin reaches out for help from Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) but Ben refuses and Martin is forced to confide in a stunned Sonia, who is horrified by what he has done. Will she keep quiet about what has happened and cover for Martin’s crime?
As it all becomes too much, Christmas Day sees Martin trying to flee Walford but Sonia calls him out for being selfish when Bex needs her dad. Things get even more awkward when Dot Branning (June Brown) gets a call from the bank, saying someone has tried to withdraw thousands from her. Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero) instantly blames Martin – has he really tried to steal from Dot to make his getaway?
With lots on his mind, Sonia later worries Martin when she tells him that he has been talking in his sleep. Has he accidentally made a life changing confession?
One to watch: Monday 23 December at 8pm on BBC One.
