EastEnders’ return to screens is imminent, but bosses are already in the process of planning what promises to be an epic festive season — which will see the return of a former character.
With the BBC One soap having been forced to take a break as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, viewers have been eagerly awaiting its return.
Three months later, and it’s time to say hello to Walford again, and while there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the serial drama’s return — from thrilling storylines, to expert methods to avoid jarring social distancing scenes — it appears as if this Christmas could be a particularly memorable one.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about what’s in store for the residents of Walford this festive season, Senior Executive Producer Kate Oates said: ‘We are in the second draft of script stage for this Christmas, which is exciting.
‘We have an exciting return planned. It’s going to also be a part of a huge other story that will have been long-running.
‘Jon [Sen, Executive Producer] is so organised with the stories — we all are — so we kind of know what we are doing the Christmas after as well.
‘We have really longterm story arcs which is when you know you’re in a good place when you’re making a soap.
When you’ve got story arcs that can just run and run and run and you can see what the hot points and the hit points are, so not only have we got this Christmas very much on its way to completion, but we know where we’re going the following one.
‘EastEnders Christmas is very much on the agenda.’
A shock return? A long-running narrative? Is it December 25 yet?
Christmas is notoriously a big event for the BBC soap, and therefore it’s only fitting that it delivers a particularly eventful one following its 35th anniversary celebrations earlier this year.
In the meantime, viewers will have plenty to look forward to, as EastEnders returns with a bang on September 7.
Speaking about what’s in store, Jon Sen said: ‘We wanted a huge level of ambition and we realised it’s an opportunity for a soap to have a great jumping on point for an audience. A bit like season two.
‘We want people to join. We put a lot of emphasis on where characters have been – we want to make a huge noise about returning.’
EastEnders returns Monday, September 7 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
