Strictly Come Dancing 2019: Anton Du Beke speaks out on ‘rivalry’ between co-stars

Anton Du Beke has an infamous track record on Strictly Come Dancing but this year he seems to be shaking off his reputation with Emma Barton. The couple have made it to the quarter-finals and will be hoping their Charleston will send them through to the next round of the competition. After last weekend’s shocking dance off, Anton has spoken out on if there’s any rivalry between the couples as the final gets closer.

Emma and Anton have received mixed comments from the judges but have yet to face the dance off.

Last weekend saw Karim Zeroual and Amy Dowden fall to the bottom two after topping the judges leaderboard.

They were then saved by the judges but the result proves anyone could go this evening and no couple is safe.

As it gets closer to the final, the stakes become even higher and all of the celebrities are determined to progress in the BBC competition.

In an exclusive interview with, Anton opened up on what it’s like behind the scenes as the celebrities prepare to dance for survival each week.

He explained: “We don’t see each other all week and then we come together on Saturday.

“Everyone’s in their own little world and they’re doing their thing and getting their hair and makeup done.

“People are just focusing on their dances because there’s no additional time to do these things that you need to focus as much time as you can on them.

The stalwart confessed there was no “rivalry” between couples as everyone is so focussed on their own dance.

“Everybody’s a bit exhausted as well by the end of the week because they’ve been working so hard.

“So that sort of rivalry stuff doesn’t exist. Everyone is a bit too knackered and a bit too nervous.”

Could this be the year Anton lifts the Glitterball Trophy with Emma or will bookmakers favourite Kelvin Fletcher take the crown?

Elsewhere Emma’s success in the competition may have sealed after a TV source spilled all on Anton.

“Anton is determined to go the final this year and has told pals he will do whatever it takes,” a TV source told The Sun.

“Emma has felt under pressure too, causing tears on the odd occasion.”

The TV insider explained the king of ballroom wants to use this series to showcase his talent.

  • Strictly Come Dancing 2019: Karim Zeroual’s exit sealed – here’s why

“Anton isn’t used to going this far in the competition and feels it is his chance to have his moment and show fans what he can do,” the source continued.

“So to say he has turned into a strict Sergeant Major-type character is an understatement.

“He’s gone from being jovial and fun to someone Emma doesn’t want to be around.”

Could Emma’s change of schedule and Anton’s determination prove to be a winning combination?

Strictly Come Dancing 2019 continues tonight at 7pm on BBC.
