Adam Peaty has revealed his departure from Strictly Come Dancing came at the right time, as he was battle some secret injury issues.

The Olympian, 26, was voted off on Sunday’s show after his jive left him in the dance-off against Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin.

However, the energetic number had been causing him some issues behind the scenes, with Adam revealing on Monday’s It Takes Two: ‘I can say this now, normally I’d keep this under wraps but my ankles were going, my calf was going.

‘I was trying to do as many runs as I can but the jive is one of those dances that requires 150%.

‘On the Thursday I was like “Katya, I can’t do any more. I am an Olympic athlete and I can push through things that most people can’t push through but my achilles is going to go if I keep going.”‘

Thankfully, Adam managed to push through to his final week and still perform on the night, getting a score of 27 from the judges.

He remained tight-lipped about his opinion on the scores when asked by host Rylan Clark-Neal, which prompted him to joke: ‘I’m trying to get you in the papers and myself out of them!’

Adam’s mum, Caroline Peaty, however, called the result a ‘total fix’ on Twitter as she posted: ‘Proud @adam_peaty and @Mrs_katjones such an amazing partnership and @Mrs_katjones you have taught my baby boy how to dance, thank you x Total fix and I’m not buying the public vote.’

Katya commented: ‘Thank you for your support Caroline and the entire family. He is definitely a dancer inside and I’ve seen it with my eyes! What a privilege it’s been for me. X.’

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
