'The Amazing Race' Season 33: Akbar and Sheri Cook Said the 19-Month Hiatus 'Hurt' Them in the Race

[Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for The Amazing Race Season 33 Episode 6, “Say Cheese.”]

CBS’ The Amazing Race Season 33 cast had to deal with obstacles no other cast of the series had to work with in the past. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), cast members had to take a break from the race after just a few legs. Over a year later, they were able to return and pick up where they left off — but it didn’t benefit everyone. Here’s what contestants Akbar and Sheri Cook said about their experience with the hiatus and how it “hurt” their gameplay.

‘The Amazing Race’ Season 33 spoilers: Akbar and Sheri Cook were most recently eliminated

The Amazing Race Season 33 Episode 6 showed the end of the road for Akbar and Sheri Cook. The couple has an athletic background, but they often had trouble communicating when it came to getting through each leg of the race. After a few tough legs, they met their end during episode 6, “Say Cheese.”

So, does the couple have any regrets when it comes to how they played? During a different leg of the race, Akbar told host Phil Keoghan he and Sheri didn’t look like a “united front,” and for that he was regretful.

“At times, I don’t think that I was giving it my all,” Sheri added, according to a clip from the show.

When Keoghan asked them what they could do to improve their game in the future, Akbar answered, “Just trust each other. Let the chips fall where they may, that’s all.”

Akbar and Sheri Cook talked about how the 19 months away from filming ‘hurt’ them in the race

Now that Akbar and Sheri Cook have been eliminated from The Amazing Race Season 33, they’re reflecting on their time on the show. Some teams were able to come back stronger after production paused due to the pandemic. But Akbar and Sheri don’t necessarily feel this was the case for them.

“So we did strategize,” Akbar told Parade. “But the 19 months hurt because of the way our lives were set up. I don’t want to make excuses, but it wasn’t like we were training for 19 months straight. We had to take off and get four to six weeks to get back in shape. And I think that hurt us because those three or four weeks we had weren’t enough to do the things that we wanted to do.”

“We worked out more, but the race was so extreme,” he added.

Despite their shortcomings and bickering on the show, Akbar noted he wants America to look at his wife like the hero she is. “And again, I apologize for how it came out,” he noted of his tone to Sheri during the race. “But I would never change the message. And she did that! She’s more of a superhero now to America because of it. So I’m the villain. And she’s Wonder Woman.”

These 2 teams appear to be the frontrunners in ‘The Amazing Race’ Season 33

While Akbar and Sheri are out, The Amazing Race Season 33 continues. Five teams remain to duke it out, and it looks like there are two teams who are the clear frontrunners of the race. Ryan Ferguson and Dusty Harris faltered during episode 6, but they made up for their mistakes and finished strong. It seems they stand as a major threat to win.

Additionally, Kim and Penn Holderness continue to dominate. They came in first place in episode 6, and they continue to showcase incredible teamwork. With their drive, wisdom, and connection, it seems they’re another tough team to beat.

Raquel Moore and Cayla Platt, Arun and Natalia Kumar, and Lulu and Lala Gonzalez are also incredible competitors. It’s anyone’s game for the rest of the race.

The Amazing Race Season 33 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
