Netflix has released the hotly anticipated first scenes from Series 5 of the Crown.

Imelda Staunton has taken on the role of the Queen, previously played by Olivia Colman, 47, and Claire Foy in the series.

Claire, 37, was highly praised for her portrayal of the young Princess Elizabeth, who was rather unexpectedly crowned Queen.

Olivia Colman, however, had a few mixed reviews for her version of the middle-aged monarch despite being distantly related to Queen Elizabeth II.

The actress, 65, has taken on the role of the Head of State in the penultimate as well as the final series of the Crown.

Many fans were overjoyed to hear Imelda had been cast to play the Queen in the final Crown series.

The actress said: "There's pressure from every angle. I'm following two extraordinary actresses, but I'm also following one extraordinary human being, which is the Queen.

"We know how she looks and how she sounds, and of course I need to be like her as much as I can, but also I have to tell a story.”

The fifth series began filming this month but is not due to air until next year.

Series five will show the death of Princess Diana, as well as the great fire at Windsor Castle and also the simultaneous divorces of her sons; Prince Andrew from Sarah Ferguson and Prince Charles from Princess Diana.

Jonathan Pryce, 74, will play the late Prince Philip, the Queens beloved husband in the last couple of series.

Dominic West is cast as Prince Charles, Her Majesty's son, who was played by Josh O’Connor.

Elizabeth Debicki plays Princess Diana, previously portrayed by Emma Corrin.

The Crown fans are also keen to see who will play Prime Ministers who the Queen meets with weekly, from Tony Blair to Sir John Major.

Imelda is married in real life to Downton Abbey actor Jim Carter, 72, who wed in 1982.

She plans on resuming her role as Maud Bagshaw in the second Downton movie alongside Dominic West, 51.
