The Handmaid’s Tale returned with another gripping episode and viewers finally got to see Mrs Wheeler’s (played by Genevieve Angelson) true colours after weeks of her playing nice. The actress hit back at fans after they slammed the character and predicted her real intentions would soon be unveiled.

After Fred Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) death, his wife Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) ensured he would have a state funeral.

The grand affair was streamed across the world and played out in front of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) who had finally let her hair down and gone on a date.

However, all her pent-up anger rushed back as she watched Gilead on the screens in her safe haven of Canada.

Her frustration turned into rage when she watched Serena kiss her kidnapped daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake) on the forehead during the proceedings.

June sought revenge when Serena returned to Canada and let off a gun outside the Gilead information centre where she was working.

As a result, Serena was rushed to the safety of the home of Gilead sympathisers Alanis Wheeler (Genevieve Angelson) and her husband Ryan Wheeler (Lucas Neff).

After she was introduced, viewers took to social media to share their apprehension about her with many labelling her “creepy.”

Many fans were unsure about Alanis because she had a strange obsession with Serena’s pregnancy and was being overly nice, yet cautious.

After seeing the backlash her character received, the actress hit back at viewers in defence of her character.

She stated: “You know, people have said — obviously I’ve been reading the comments — and people have said things like, ‘[Alanis is] so scary, she’s so creepy.’

“And I’m grateful that it’s landing in that way but I think there’s also a part of me that’s like, ‘You guys, that’s just actually my smile when I’m excited!’”

Genevieve explained: “When I love something, that’s actually what it looks like.

“I would never choose to play creepy, or icky that’s just not how I work, I just played that I love someone so much.

“There’s something about being passionate that actually, in the wrong circumstances, is terrifying,” she told TV Line.

Since Serena was placed in their home for safety, she had slowly begun losing all rights to her freedom, in a similar fashion to June.

As June was Serena and Fred’s Handmaid, she was not allowed to go outside on her own and her sole purpose was to provide children for them.

With Serena’s current pregnancy, fans have predicted that she would become the Wheeler’s Handmaid.

Alanis was being overly cautious of Serena’s pregnancy and ensuring she had enough rest for the baby, almost as if Serena was her surrogate.

However, Alanis’ true colours were revealed when the two clashed over Serena not wanting to get re-married after Fred’s death.

In a spit of rage, she ordered Serena to her room and in that instant, she realised they were not friends but it had become something more sinister.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 continues every Wednesday on Hulu in the USA. The series will premiere in the UK on Amazon Prime Video and Channel 4 this month.
