The Haunting of Hill House releases first pictures and release date on Netflix

Summer is nearly over, meaning we can gleefully retire our kimonos and sliders to make way for Halloween, and new horror series The Haunting of Hill House

… which is hitting Netflix on October 12 – in perfect time for Halloween, aka the best time of the year.

The Haunting of Hill House is based on a thriller novel written by Shirley Jackson in the 1950s. It follows Eleanor, a shy young woman who has a long history of experiencing paranormal phenomena, and her three fellow guests at Hill House, a mansion which appears to be haunted.

The novel wouldn’t provide enough material to fill a full TV series, however, meaning the team behind the adaptation have had to adjust it to make it suitable for TV.

“I don’t want to give anything away, but I adore the novel,” director Mike Flanagan previously told Digital Spy.

“It doesn’t span a 10-hour season of television. We had to make some changes to make it fit, but I think they’re all in the spirit of what she was doing, and I think fans of the book will be very excited.”

The new adaptation from Gerald’s Game filmmaker Flanagan instead follows a family in both modern day and the past as they deal with ghosts that have come to haunt them.

Game of Thrones‘ Michiel Huisman (Daario Naharis) will star as supernatural writer Steven Crane in the new series, alongside Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game), Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Reaser and Henry Thomas.
