The Yorkshire Vet is a documentary series that follows veterinarians Peter Wright and Julian Norton as they attend to animals in need at their practices in North Yorkshire. Peter, who has been a staple on the Channel 5 series since 2015 has quickly become a firm favourite with fans. The 64-year-old, who has had a few nicknames during his lifetime, recently opened up about how he got branded with a rather unusual moniker.
In an interview with Fiona Thompson, chairperson for the RTS Yorkshire Centre, the vet was quizzed about why he gets referred to as Mr Testicle.
“In some of the programmes you get referred to as Mr Testicle,” Fiona laughed.
“I watched one the other day where there were four kittens laid out in a row, in a production line.
“How did you get that name? Or did you give it to yourself?”
Peter admitted he wasn’t aware of the name until it was pointed out to him about the number of castrations he carries out on animals.
“We often say, technically it isn’t a difficult operation,” he explained.
“The hard bit is persuading your patient that it needs to part with them.
“And, certainly when you’re dealing with unruly balls there’s nothing more true than that.”
“So, it’s a case of sometimes, capture your patient,” Peter continued.
“And we’ve had one to two instances of that on The Yorkshire Vet where the holding facility might not have been as robust as it should have been.”
“I find it quite amusing,” the vet laughed. “I don’t take myself too seriously.
“I think as a vet, sometimes you think things are going so well. Your patients are getting better and then there’s something that knocks you flat on your back and doesn’t work as well as you’d expect.”
He added: “And that’s why I don’t get carried away with anything anymore.
“I’ve very philosophical about everything I do.”
During the last series of The Yorkshire Vet, Peter revealed why he made the difficult decision to leave the Skeldale Veterinary Centre after 40 years.
According to The Yorkshire Post, Peter decided to leave due to the significant drop in dairy herds in Thirsk, which is what the vet specialised in.
Instead, Skeldale became a surgery that specialised in treating household pets including the likes of cats, dogs, and other small animals.
As a result, Peter had to make the difficult decision of either taking early retirement or trying to relocate to another veterinary practice.
After a discussion with his wife, Lin, the TV personality decided to move to Grace Lane Vets in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, where there are more farmers with livestock in need of veterinary care.
Speaking about his departure from the practice, Peter told the publication: “This is the end of an era for me.
“But at the same time, as one door closes, another opens and I have a new challenge to look forward to now, I can’t dwell on the past.”
The Yorkshire Vet airs on Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 5.
