University Challenge viewers left FUMING by contestant's 'rude and hostile' habit

UNIVERSITY Challenge fans blasted a contestant as "rude" for "a lack of basic manners" as he starred alongside his teammates.

The latest instalment of host Jeremy Paxman's BBC Two show saw a group from The University Of Edinburgh battle it out against Emmanuel College Cambridge.

As the Scottish team of Jones, Thomas, Karunaratne and team captain Sundar was read out, all seemed well.

Yet University Challenge viewers soon became irked by the panel – particularly Thomas – as the quiz questions began.

After securing the bonus points round questions following a starter for ten, Thomas, clad in a navy blue top, clearly turned his back on Jones, who was perched at the end.

Jones, donning a smart red jumper, could only look on and attempt to interject as his co-stars debated in their huddle.

Regular viewers were quick to pick up on the apparent snub from the off, with one taking to Twitter to rage: "Why is Thomas turning his back on Jones. So f**king rude."

Another questioned: "Thomas got issue with Jones ? Or just being rude," as a third squealed: "What the heck was Thomas doing turning his back on Jones for most of the show? It was like 'We don’t want you in our gang, don’t we captain'?"

Another posted a series of images of contestant Thomas as he mused: "Am trying to fathom whether Thomas’s body language is interesting, threatening or downright frightening …"

The comments continued to distract from the questions, with another writing: "Thomas and Jones look like they blank each other. Body language with Thomas turning his back and Jones constantly looking the other way was stressful to watch #universitychallenge."

Another then concluded: "Lawd Thomas sit straight… poor Jones. Well done Jones..excellent."

The suggested snub did not seem to impact Edinburgh's performance, though, as they won with a score of 150 to Emmanuel Cambridge’s 145.

Emmanuel will have another stab at reaching the semi final at a later date.
