Katheryn Winnick portrayed shieldmaiden Lagertha for almost six whole seasons on the popular History drama, also available on Amazon Prime Video. Ahead of the Vikings star’s new TV series Big Sky coming to ABC next year, the actress has given fans a taste of what’s coming with some exclusive set photos on Instagram.

Vikings fan favourite Katheryn Winnick may have been killed off in the latest season of the historical epic, but she will be returning to TV screens very soon.

Winnick was confirmed to be joining the cast of Big Sky earlier this year, a detective procedural series which follows two private detectives searching for two missing girls in Montana.

Previously known for portraying the fierce shieldmaiden Lagertha, Winnick will step in to play Jenny Hoyt, an ex-cop and estranged wife of P.I. Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe), who joins forces to help solve the case.

She will also be joined by break-out actress Kylie Bunbury, star of When They See Us for Netflix, and Hollywood character actor John Carroll Lynch.

Filming began on August 27 in British Columbia, and is expected to conclude in January next year in time for a summer 2021 release date.

Big Sky is set to become a major television event next year thanks to its all-star cast and intriguing premise, and Vikings fans are eager to see Katheryn Winnick take on her next role.

Winnick took to her Instagram stories this week to tease the first week of filming for the upcoming mystery series.

Her first post featured a behind-the-scenes snap of the star receiving a test for coronavirus, assuring her followers the production team on Big Sky are following the correct safety procedures.

She captioned the post: “First Day of Shooting.. Covid Test here we go..”

There is still uncertainty regarding the state of the entertainment industry across North America, with many productions in the United States still holding off returning to set until safety can be guaranteed.

However, business has started to bounce back in Canada after stricter lockdown restrictions have led to a more significant dip in reported deaths and new cases.

Popular series such as Riverdale have been confirmed to be resuming filming in Canada last month, with Big Sky on track to shoot the first season by the start of next year.

After confirming her COVID test, Winnick went on to post the first sneak peek at her Big Sky role, Jenny Hoyt.

TV viewers are used to seeing the star decked out in furs and armour on the medieval drama, Vikings.

Thankfully, her new post seems to confirm a more modern, practical look as Winnick snapped herself seated in the makeup chair wearing a simple blue hoodie.

Although the behind-the-scenes selfie doesn’t confirm if this outfit will be part of Jenny Hoyt’s wardrobe in the series, the beauty products on display provide some idea of her look in the series.

Big Sky will be Katheryn Winnick’s first role since departing Vikings at the start of 2020, although she was also part of the main cast of Netflix’s Wu Assassins last year.

She will also feature in upcoming films Flag Day and Wander, which are currently both in the post-production stage.

The second half of Vikings’ sixth season is still on hold, though it is hoped the series will conclude later this year.

Vikings season 6 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
