WWE SmackDown Live results: 4 things we learned after a major return and shock title change

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains full show match results and video highlights from SmackDown Live, broadcast from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday, August 21.

After the thrills and spills of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn IV, SummerSlam 2018, and Monday Night Raw, last night saw the FOURTH evening of action at the Barclays Center when SmackDown Live rolled in to town.

With Hell in a Cell 2018 and Evolution not far away, there wasn’t too much time to pick over the bones of the Biggest Event of the Summer.

Read on to find out four things we learned, including a shock title change and surprise return.

1. The New Day are FIVE-TIME WWE SmackDown Tag Team champions after a shock victory over The Bludgeon Brothers

Well, we didn’t see that coming.

After their SummerSlam 2018 match ended in a disqualification when The Bludgeon Brothers got all bludgeony with their mallets, a rematch was booked as the main event for tonight’s show.

There was a no-DQ stipulation to prevent a repeat of Sunday night’s shenanigans, and although the New Day had a potential numbers advantage because of that, we still fancied Harper and Rowan.

But instead The New Day pulled it out the bag to become tag team champs once more.

There were tables and ladders and chairs (OH MY) involved and in the end it was Xavier Woods who hit a top-rope elbow on Harper through a table for the win.

It’s their third SmackDown Tag Team Champion reign and their sixth in total across both brands.

Not many would have seen that when the trio were getting booed out of arenas in 2014.

2. Brie Bella is back and will tag team with Daniel Bryan against Maryse and The Miz at Hell in a Cell

We expected Daniel Bryan and The Miz’s feud to continue after Maryse’s involvement got her man the W on Sunday night.

But we didn’t expect it to take this turn.

After The Miz and Maryse mocked Daniel Bryan’s famous retirement speech and called him Daniel Bella, out came not only D-Bry but his wife Brie Bella too.

As well as getting a small measure of revenge last night with a flurry of punches, Daniel Bryan grabbed the mic with some big news.

Oh, and there’s more…

Daniel Bryan will also face The Miz 1vs1 once more, at the Super Show Down in Australia on Saturday, October 6.

And the winner will get a future WWE Title match.

3. Becky Lynch vs Charlotte Flair is ongoing and should main event Hell in a Cell

For months we’ve been lobbying for Sasha Banks vs Bayley to explode and headline at Hell in a Cell 2018. Not gonna happen.

The Boss ‘n’ Hug Connection are best of friends (for now), but another feud has leapt up the charts to be one of the most bad tempered on either brand.

Charlotte Flair not only bounded back into title contention after her return from injury with barely a win or two to earn it, she took the belt from under Becky Lynch’s nose when she won in the Triple Threat with Carmella on Sunday.

Lynch, to put it mildly, was not happy.

And their confrontation got so heated that damn near every woman in that locker room was getting involved to calm things down (or stir things up).

Carmella still has a rematch and she’ll be getting it against Charlotte on next week’s SDLive, but we think Flair’s experience and swagger will see her through easily.

Really, there’s only one way the Charlotte and Becky feud can and should end. A cell match, main eventing Hell in a Cell.

4. Though AJ Styles and Samoa Joe will probably say something about that…

AJ Styles kept on to his belt on Sunday night despite his DQ loss to Samoa Joe, but Joe definitely isn’t finished with him.

When AJ was mouthing off in anger about what he’d do the next time he saw Joe, the Samoan hit Styles with a surprise Coquina Clutch from behind.

He carried on creeping out AJ’s family (and the WWE Universe) with another family-directed promo.

With things getting more and more unpleasant, there’s no doubt that both these men will want to settle things once and for all in the cell, and in the main event.

And with Roman Reigns and Ronda Rousey also set to defend their titles at next month’s PPV, there are (at least) four strong contenders for that headlining spot.

We’ll wait and see how things build, but that can only be a good thing.
