Ranch owner John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) is still on the brink of death heading into the next season of Yellowstone. With his life on the line and potential enemies on all sides, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) could be about to leave a power vacuum when he sets out to take his revenge once the thrilling Paramount drama finally returns.

Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) could become the next ranch manager in the next season of the hit Western series Yellowstone.

Following a shocking series of attacks on the Dutton family, ranch owner John will undoubtedly have a long stay in the hospital after he was shot down on the side of the road.

The first sneak peek at season four reveals John’s trusted ranch manager Rip Wheeler finds him bleeding out at the start of the premiere.

Although it’s still unknown who orchestrated the attack, Rip will stop at nothing to ensure those responsible face justice.

However, with Rip taking care of business away from the Yellowstone, the remaining ranch hands will have to step up to the plate to ensure things are running smoothly in his absence.

In a conversation about the latest season, stars Jefferson White (Jimmy Hurdstrom) and Ian Bohen (Ryan) compared their characters’ different approaches to life on the ranch.

While Hurdstrom admitted Jimmy is looking for guidance, Bohen suggested Ryan may appreciate Kayce’s more hands-off approach.

The actor explained: “I think when you have that structure it doesn’t let the individual be anything more than what they are.”

“And that’s why the ranch maybe has a high turnover rate, because people come in, they can’t move around, do anything, and then they want to leave.”

Ranch hands have come and gone throughout the series, but some core members of the bunkhouse crew have managed to stick it out for the first three seasons.

With Rip Wheeler blazing a trail of revenge in the next season, Jimmy may find himself struggling without his manager’s authoritative presence giving him the kick he needs.

Conversely, Kayce’s willingness to trust the ranchers to do what they do best could allow Ryan to rise through the ranks much quicker than he may have done under Rip.

Bohen continued: “And someone like Ryan needs to excel and achieve more.

“And that’s why under Kayce he’s more likely to advance, to contribute in new ways and become the asset he thinks he can be to the ranch, because that’s allowed.”

The Yellowstone star believed his philosophies are almost the opposite of Jimmy’s, who almost enjoys having his entire life dictated by Rip and the ranch.

But, after the devastating events of the last season, it’s become quite clear the ranch manager won’t be sticking around for long, and could hand the reins over to someone else.

While Kayce could be a likely candidate, he was also targeted by the attacks, and will surely want to take down his father’s would-be killers.

With Beth most likely in hospital and Rip and Kayce tracking down the culprits, the responsibility could fall on Ryan to ensure the ranch maintains its high standards.

Unfortunately, fans have just a bit longer to wait to find out what happens next this year, as Yellowstone is skipping its usual June premiere for a speculated release in November.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in late 2021 on Paramount.
