104-year-old woman is given round of applause by Colombian hospital staff after beating Covid-19 a SECOND time

• The 104-year-old woman was first diagnosed with Covid-19 in June last year
• She was able to beat the virus but was reinfected for second time in March

A 104-year-old woman has been given a round of applause by Colombian hospital staff after she recovered from Covid-19 for the second time in less than a year. 

Carmen Hernandez received a standing ovation from the medics as they lined up along the corridors of the San Rafael de Tunja University Hospital in the city of Tunja as she was transported through on a hospital bed.  

And as she made her way outside – now with a ventilated plastic cover over the bed – scores of staff clad in PPE kit continued the round of applause as Hernandez was discharged after 21 days in the hospital.

Carmen was transported on her hospital bed through the corridors after beating the virus 

Hernandez was first diagnosed with Covid-19 in June last year and was treated in the San Jose nursing home where she has lived for 25 years. 

She was able to beat the virus – but despite being vaccinated in February this year,  Hernandez was diagnosed with Covid-19 for the second time in March. 

Hernandez was admitted to the San Rafael de Tunja University Hospital’s intensive care unit where doctors and nurses have been treating her. 

On Monday, she was able to be transported away from the hospital in an ambulance to her care home after beating the virus for a second time.

Gina Gomez, a health worker at the San Jose nursing home, told local reporters: ‘She is an elderly patient with an excellent physical capability because she resisted the virus for the second time. 

‘Thank God she has done very well and has beaten this virus.’ 

Yamit Noé Hurtado, the director of the hospital told Caracol Radio: ‘Precisely because of her advanced age, for us she is a hope. 

‘This woman managed to come out fully recovered from the coronavirus in this first reinfection. We had to give him assistance in the ICU for 21 days.’ 

Not only has Hernandez beaten Covid-19 twice, she has also recovered from an aggressive form of skin cancer.

Hernandez was born in Tunja on 14 July 1916 and has a daughter who is around 70 years old.
