Homes Under The Hammer star Martin Roberts is one of the brave celebrities who has decided to bare all in Strictly The Real Full Monty to raise awareness for all-important cancer checks. During the first episode of the two-part ITV show, the property expert teared up when he revealed the heartbreaking reason behind signing up for the striptease. He emotionally explained he was taking part in the risque performance in memory of his best friend who died of bowel cancer.
The 58-year-old has teamed up with a host of celebrities, including Blue Singer Duncan James and EastEnders’ star Laila Morse, to raise awareness for cancer.
In the first instalment, which aired on Monday night, the stars explained why they were taking part in the daring show which was choreographed by Diversity dancer Ashley Banjo.
Ashley explained: “This whole process really tests people like it’s a mental game.
“People think it’s a physical thing because you have to get naked but it’s all up there, and it’s all about whether you can get on top of your own mind, and Martin is really worried about this.”
Martin revealed he had to battle “a lot of internal stuff” ahead of the big striptease.
He explained: “I don’t want to be too dramatic but I’m actually really emotional.
“As a child I was fat and I was bullied all the way throughout school.
“It takes a lot to get over that body image thing and there’s no way in a million years I’d be doing this if it wasn’t for doing it in memory of Dave.”
Martin, who started welling up as he was speaking about Dave, continued: “He was my friend, my best mate, who died. Dave was the brother I never had.
“You don’t realise until you’ve lost someone quite how pivotal and important they were.
“I know what I am doing this for is the bigger picture, but for right now, for me personally, this is a real struggle.”
Martin lost his best friend of 30 years to cancer four years ago after he did not get himself checked.

Speaking to Express.co.uk Martin previously said: “He left behind his wife and two young teenage kids.
“His wife was absolutely convinced that if he got to the doctors sooner, he would have probably still been here but being a bloke he was like ‘Oh I’ve got a bit of blood in my poo, no big deal, you know, whatever.’
“That, unfortunately, is the way that most blokes are, when it comes to especially sort of private places, people are like ‘Do I really need to go somewhere, do I want a finger up my bum?’”
Martin hopes his appearance on the show will do something for another family to make sure they don’t have to go through what he saw first-hand.
The presenter also admitted he’s always had body insecurities, having been badly bullied at school when he was young.
He said: “I had a real problem with my weight as a child and I was really badly bullied for being fat so the idea of putting myself up for that again to have people laugh at me was an absolute frickin’ nightmare.
“But when you look at what it’s all about you realise there is something bigger going on here.”
