Aaron Hernandez had tearfully told his mother that he was gay before his prison cell suicide — with his family still fearing he became a killer to hide his secret sex life, his brother says in a new TV interview.
The former New England Patriots tight end and his mother, Terri Hernandez, were both “flooded with tears” during a prison visit when he confided about his sexuality, Jonathan Hernandez told Dr. Oz.
“He’s like, ‘Mom, you’re going die never knowing your son,’ ” the brother recalled in his interview set to air in full on Thursday.
“Then all of a sudden they have this conversation and they’re both flooded with tears across from each other,” Jonathan told Dr. Oz, recalling “the weight of what’s on my brother is being expressed and for a mother to be looking at it across from the scratched glass.”
The mom appeared to be the only family member the NFL star confided in — with his brother having no idea, and Hernandez certain to have been too afraid to confide in his already brutal father.
“I don’t know if he would have been able to finish his sentence,” Jonathan said, when asked what would have happened if Aaron told his dad, Dennis Hernandez, his “conflicted thoughts” on his sexuality.
“I can’t imagine him even being able to — my dad would have thought he could beat that out of him,” the brother told Dr. Oz of their dad, who died in 2006.
The NFL star’s desperation to keep his sexuality a secret has been suggested as a possible motive for him shooting dead former friend Odin Lloyd in 2013. Hernandez was serving life in prison for the murder, carrying his motive to the grave when he hanged himself in 2017.
“That’s one of the questions and, you know, head scratches that they still have regarding really this entire case,” his brother admitted.
“There’s just so many questions regarding everything. And, for me to sit here and say it was this or that, I can’t say. All you can do is look at the evidence that was provided.”
