It is understood he was with friends on the island when the tragedy happened.
Medics tried desperately to save the man following the accident at Cala Gració, near Sant Antoni.
At this stage, it is not known if he stumbled and fell or whether he was trying to dive into the sea.
Police said he plummeted from a height of between six and eight metres at around 4.30pm this afternoon.
His identity has not yet been revealed.
Emergency services, including the police and Civil Guard, were called out and found the Brit was in cardio respiratory arrest. They gave him heart massage and carried out prolonged resuscitation but without success. He was declared dead at the scene.
Psychologists were brought in to help those affected by the tragedy.
Local newspapers say the man plunged into the water and was pulled out by his friends.
