Couple try to arrange wedding in a week after groom’s crushing cancer diagnosis

A devastated couple are trying to arrange their wedding in just seven days after the groom was given a crushing cancer diagnosis

Sharon Marsden and Andy McDonald from Coventry had been planning on getting married next year, when Andy was told he had just weeks to live.

The 47-year-old has suffered from a number of health issues, and had tests after suffering what was thought to be a chest infection in December.

But it turned out to be lung cancer and Andy quickly underwent an aggressive course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, reports Coventry Live .

Though recently it was discovered that the cancer had left Andy’s lung, it had sadly spread to his liver and spine – and he was given just weeks to live.

Sharon and Andy were planning on getting married next year, when Andy was better. But with the tragic news, they have had to have a rethink.

And the couple, who have two young children, are trying to organise a wedding – in just one week’s time.

On August 20, the couple are set to tie the knot, but they need some help to make the day extra special. Sharon said: "We’re getting married at Coventry Registry Office, and we’re having the reception at Wyken Working Men’s Club.

"We were going to get married next year when Andy was better, but that changed when he was given about two months to live.

"So we’re trying to raise money now to make the day extra special, to hire a DJ, get some flowers, that sort of thing.

"We have also set up a fundraiser for our reception and honeymoon in the UK."

Sharon set up a fundraiser on Facebook, with the hope of raising £1,000. Remarkably, in just seven days, she has raised £2,090.

In the fundraising appeal, she wrote: "Me and my fiancé Andy have been together for 13 years and we have two children aged nine and 12.

"In January Andy was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer where he endured a month of aggressive chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

"Though recently we have found out that the cancer is gone from his lung, he now has it in his liver and spine and has been given two months to live – he now only has about six weeks left. We are planning on getting married on August 20 at Coventry Registry Office.

"However, we need to raise money for our reception and a honeymoon in the UK.

"Anything you can donate will be gratefully received."

Anyone who might be able to supply flowers or DJ equipment is asked to contact Sharon on [email protected] and anyone who wants to donate to the fundraiser can do so here.
