'Distressed' woman seen running from bushes as police hunt man

‘Distressed’ woman is seen running from bushes while holding her trousers as police hunt man spotted leaving scene moments later

  • Disturbing incident occurred near Rose Gardens, Portsmouth, on Monday  
  • Male suspect described as of mixed race, around 5ft 9ins and aged 30 to 35
  • He was seen grabbing a second woman by the wrist and neck moments later 

A ‘distressed’ woman was seen emerging from bushes holding her trousers, shortly before a man was spotted leaving the scene and grabbing a second woman by the wrist and neck.

The disturbing reports, which happened near the Rose Gardens, Portsmouth, shortly after midnight on Monday, have prompted police to issue a call for help in identifying the man in question, The Sun reports.

A statement from Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘A distressed woman was seen leaving an area of bushes by the Rose Gardens close to the tennis courts, which back onto Canoe Lake.

‘We are currently conducting a number of lines of enquiry in order to identify the man and the woman who was seen in distress.’

The woman was wearing a red top and holding what appeared to be a pair of trousers or leggings. She ran away in the direction of the golf course.

Police are looking for a male, who is described as of mixed race, around 5ft 9ins tall, and aged between 30 to 35-years-old. 

He had a Pakistani accent and was wearing a black hoody, black jogging bottoms and a plain black baseball cap.

The suspect’s entire face was covered except for his eyes.

After leaving the scene, witnesses saw the man grabbing a second woman, who is in her 30s, by the wrist and neck before walking away in the direction of the Rose Gardens.

The second woman was not injured.

DS Terry Langworthy, of Hampshire Constabulary’s Criminal Investigation Department, said: ‘We are currently working to establish the exact circumstances of this incident and a key part of our enquiries is identifying and speaking to the woman who was seen in distress. 

‘We are very keen to speak to her to make sure she is ok and to find out if there is anything she would like to report to us.

‘We’re also working to identify the man described above and would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and saw a man matching the above description or anyone acting suspiciously in the area. 

‘Did you see a woman who appeared upset or do you know someone who this may have been? 

‘Did you witness an altercation between a man and a woman in the area around the time specified? 

‘Perhaps you were driving through the area at the time and have dash cam footage that may assist our investigation?

‘We appreciate that reports of this nature are concerning for those living in the area and we would like to reassure you that we are working really hard to establish the circumstances of what has happened and to locate the man involved.

‘Officers will be carrying out extra patrols in the area over the next couple of days. Please do approach them if you have any concerns or questions.’
