Some far-right news outlets misidentified the Jacksonville shooter as a Trump-bashing Reddit user, according to a report.
Fringe sites Infowars and Gateway Pundit identified the competitive video gamer who opened fire at the Madden NFL 19 tournament Sunday as a user named “Ravenschamp” who posted negatively about President Trump and his supporters, NBC News said Tuesday.
The sites pointed to Ravenschamp’s posts slamming Trump and to a comment where he had called other people on the site “Trumptards” as possible motives for the shooting.
It turns out that the account’s owner is a Minnesota native named Pavel — not Baltimore resident and Florida killer David Katz.
Katz, 24, who killed himself in the bloodbath, used the account name “Ravens2012champs.”
Pavel, who didn’t want his last name used, said he logged into his account Monday, the day after the shooting, and found about 70 messages waiting for him.
“I look at the messages, and it’s a bunch of people using my username claiming I’m that Madden shooter person. Half of them are messages like, ‘I hope that person’s dead,’ ” Pavel told NBC.
He said he wrote back to one person, “I’m alive, you know?” and then went on Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything” board to answer questions about what it was like to have his old posts shared across the Web as a possible motive of a mass shooting.
