UFO enthusiasts have gone wild after a mysterious object was spotted in the night sky over Australia.

In footage, widely shared online on Monday, a strange disc shaped object was filmed flying over Sydney’s Skies as far as the Central Coast.

Captured at around 8pm the object appeared in the shape of a “white boomerang,” leaving a luminous trail across the sky.

As further images and videos of the night-time marvel soon filled social media, a number of imaginative residents soon questioned whether it could be an alien aircraft.

“Did anyone see the strange light moving across the sky about 10 minutes ago?” one local resident posted on Facebook.

“I hope I'm not the only one who saw it because it's the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my life.”

Another resident, however suggested, that it was most likely a satellite 0- given the way that it had moved through the sky.

The only explanation we found was a satellite but a very weird one as it looked like it was under the cloud, a woman posted to Facebook. 

"Also there is no sound at all so obviously not a regular plane," she added.

And it later emerged that she wasn’t far off the mark after it was revealed that the object was instead a new version of Chinese rocket.

Exerts confirmed it was specifically one of two new Long March 3B navigation satellites that had launched from the Xichang Launch Center earlier in the day.

They also said that the visible part – causing the luminous light effect – was the exhaust.

“The plume is like exhaust, gas coming out during launch of the rocket. Sometimes if it happens in the evening you can see the stranger shape and sight,” Dr Brad Tucker told the Telegraph. 

The Chinese rockets, which broadcast in 4K and 8K, are reportedly being trailed in preparation for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. 

Yet Dr Tucker said it was considered a "bit of a surprise" amid the signing of the historic military agreement with the USA and UK last week. 

“Sightings like this can be rare and surprising – given their weird shape and they way they move in the sky,” he claimed.

"However, as more rocket launches happen – this was actually China's second launch of the day, they are becoming more and more common.”
