Matt Hancock weighed in on Lizz Truss’ disastrous premiership during Tuesday night’s I’m A Celebrity, stating that her ‘political career is over’.

In a chat with is campmates, the former Health Secretary, 44, gave his thoughts on where it went wrong for the ex Prime Minister, 47, who became Britain’s shortest-serving PM lasting just 44 days in power.

Meanwhile, Matt also spoke about Boris Johnson’s shocking decision to re-run for Prime Minister after Lizz had quit, telling the group that he advised Boris that it ‘wasn’t his time to return’.

As talk turned to missing the news back home, Scarlette Douglas pondered: ‘I wonder if Rishi’s still in power.’

To which MP Matt, who previously told he’ll never serve in government again, responded: ‘Yeah, he will be.’

Sue Cleaver then piped up and asked Matt what he thought ‘went wrong’ amid Lizz’s short stint at Number 10.

Giving his thoughts on the fiasco, Matt explained: ‘In a way, they were unlucky, in that globally interest rates all went up, just at the time that they were also… bringing in a financial statement where you say, ‘We’re going to do all these expensive things and we’re not going to say how we’re going to pay for them’.

The Coronation Street star then asked: ‘Where does that leave her now?’

To which Matt responded: ‘Her political career is over. No ambiguity at all.’

Over in the Bush Telegraph, Matt later added: ‘There I was sat in the comfy red chair and I felt like I was on Mastermind being asked all these questions.’

However, his grilling wasn’t over yet as newsreader and journalist Charlene White then asked: ‘Why do you think Tory Party members went for the less experienced…’

Matt then said: ‘I think that’s all about how Boris got kicked out. It was all about people seeing Rishi as wielding the knife against Boris.’

Pushing him further, Charlene then continued: ‘So they decided to, one could argue, punish the entire country, by putting someone in place who was less experienced?’

With Matt arguing back: ‘That implies a malign motive, which isn’t fair. But they definitely put the disloyalty to Boris as a negative, as a bigger factor than..,’

Seann Walsh then jumped into the conversation, asking Matt: ‘Were you a Boris ‘die-hard’?’

Referring to Boris quitting as Prime Minister, Matt said: ‘Look, I was very supportive of him, but it was time. When it was time to go, it was time to go.’

Touching on the politician’s short-lived attempt to come back into power, Charlene asked: ‘When he flew back from his holiday in the Caribbean, what was your first thought?’

With Matt revealing: ‘I texted him and I said, ‘You know I think you’re wonderful but it’s not your time. The best thing for the country is that you should back Rishi and that we should get him in post as soon as possible’.’

Matt has previously received a grilling by his campmates over his own controversies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a conversation, the politician said he was ‘looking for forgiveness’ and struggled to contain his emotions as he apologised to camp for having an affair with Gina Coladangelo, which saw him break his own guidance, lose his job and cause the collapse of his 15-year marriage to wife Martha.

Loose Women’s Charlene, 42, had told the politician her aunt died from the virus and that she hadn’t been able to visit her in hospital due to the rules he had set in place – before disregarding them himself.

Speaking later in the Bush Telegraph, Matt said: ‘In a way, lots of the campmates asked questions that the public have got as well and it’s only respectful to just give completely straight and truthful answers.’

It comes as the families of Covid victims vented their anger at Matt Hancock on Tuesday by flying a banner over the I’m A Celebrity camp calling for him to be axed.

More than 44,000 people signed a petition to prevent the MP from taking part in the reality TV show due to his record as Health Secretary.

And on Tuesday his opponents mounted their most visible protest yet, flying a message saying: ‘Covid bereaved say get out of here!’

The 115-foot long banner was organised by British protest groups Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice and 38 Degrees, which today slammed the MP for overseeing ‘one of the world’s highest death tolls from Covid’.
