Jeremy Corbyn urged by Labour frontbencher to condemn treatment of gay people in Iran

JEREMY Corbyn was last night under pressure from one of his own frontbenchers to condemn Iran’s treatment of gay people.

Shadow Communities Secretary Andrew Gwynne said the Iranian regime was “abhorrent”.

But Labour leader Corbyn has stayed silent as 21 people have died protesting against Tehran’s hardline Muslim leadership.

Mr Gwynne said he would be surprised if Corbyn did not slam the treatment of gays in Iran. They can face the death penalty for having sex.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “That is abhorrent, it runs against everything that the Labour party stands for.”

But Mr Gwynne said the party was right to take a cautious approach to the demonstrations.
