My son Lee Rigby was murdered 10 years ago…but I still leave an empty chair out for him every night | The Sun

LEE Rigby's mum has revealed she still leaves an empty chair at the table for her son ten years after he was murdered.

Fusilier Lee, 25, was stabbed to death as he walked home near his barracks in Woolwich, South East London, on May 22, 2013.

Extremists Michael Adebolajo and accomplice Michael Adebowale were jailed for life over the killing, which horrified the nation.

Ten years on, Lee's mum Lyn Rigby has opened up about life without her beloved son.

She told GMB she still has a picture of Lee next to her bed and says "good morning" to him each morning as a "focus to get up".

Lyn added: "At family occasions when we all get together on a celebration, there's always an empty chair there for Lee at the dining table.

"That's just what we do."

The mum also revealed how she is sure her son can hear her when she speaks to him.

She said strange things have happened at home and that she can feel Lee hugging her at night telling her to carry on.

Lyn added: "Things happen in the house, you know, things can fly off the windowsill or the mantlepiece.

"There's nothing to explain why this has happened. I do feel quite a warmth of a night time and I think that Lee's there, sat there next to me, you know, giving me a nice hug, telling me that he loves me and that 'you've got to carry on'."

Dad-of-one Lee was mown down in a car before being hacked at with knives and a meat cleaver.

Homegrown jihadis Adebolajo and Adebowale had picked off-duty Lee out at random.

The evil pair urged horrified onlookers to film them gloating over Lee's body in gruesome scenes as bloodied Adebolajo clutched the cleaver.

Adebolajo was given a whole-life term and Adebowale was jailed for a minimum of 45 years.

In the wake of Lee's death, Lyn set up the Lee Rigby Foundation to help suffering veterans and bereaved military families.

His son Jack, who was just two when Lee was slain, has recently been taking part in the Scotty’s May Marathon in memory of his dad.

The 12-year-old has already smashed his £10,000 target – £1,000 for every year his dad has been gone.

Jack has so far raised a staggering £40,000 for Scotty's Little Soldiers, a charity that has supported him in the decade since his dad's murder.

His mum Rebecca, 40, said: “The amount that’s been raised so far is absolutely phenomenal and I am immensely proud of Jack for everything that he is doing to raise funds and awareness for Scotty’s, and to do something positive in Lee’s name.

“May’s not an easy time for us and doing this is really helping Jack to get through this difficult period, so thank you.”
