John Bercow praises behaviour of BABY in the Commons and says she was conducting herself better than most MPs – including her politician father
- John Bercow said the daughter of Clive Lewis, the MP for Norwich South, was on good form as she watched in the public gallery
- Earlier he lost control of the Commons as the SNP raged about the cutting short of a debate on devolution
- Added that while Lewis’ behaviour is not always ‘impeccable’, his baby girl conducted herself well in the Commons
A baby sitting in the public gallery of the House of Commons has been praised for her good behaviour during today’s explosive meeting – and even got a round of applause.
Speaker John Bercow went as far to add that the daughter of Clive Lewis, the MP for Norwich South, was conducting herself better than most politicians in the room – including her father.
Earlier Bercow completely lost control of the Commons as the SNP raged about the cutting short of a debate on devolution last night.
Labour MP Clive Lewis, pictured with his actress wife Katy Steel and daughter Zana, says his baby girl ‘got a bigger cheer in the House of Commons than he has ever had’
The House of Commons descended into chaos as the SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford was expelled for trying to call a stunt vote in the middle of PMQs.
Bercow said: ‘I must just say to the House, that I am most grateful to the Prime Minister and before we come to points of order, that for all the turbulence and discord of today’s proceedings the little baby who has been observing them has been a model of impeccable behaviour from start to finish.’
Cheers and claps erupted through the room as Bercow smiled looking up at little Zana, who was most likely sitting with her actress mother Katy Steel.
Steel, who studied at the East 15 Acting School in Essex, has featured in a number of adverts, films and theatre productions including the 2010 Tim Burton feature film Alice and commercials for the likes of Virgin and Kodak.

Pointing back to Lewis, Bercow added: ‘And I have just been advised that the father is the member for Norwich South.
‘I won’t go as far to say that his behaviour is always impeccable but the little baby has has been impeccable and I think we salute that.
‘The future of of our democracy and the future of our country.’
During today’s PMQ’s, SNP Westminster leader Blackford said Brexit was being used as a ‘power grab’ from the Scottish Parliament and branded last night’s debate a ‘democratic outrage’.

Twitter user @BaxtorCowhig was watching today’s meeting and commented that Barcow pointing out the baby’s behaviour ‘was great’
Twitter user @BenLanmead1 also added that he enjoyed Bercow’s comments about little Zana, although the rest of the meeting was ‘too melodramatic’
Mr Blackford tried to use an arcane procedure demanding the ‘House sit in private’ – a motion that requires a vote of MPs on whether to clear public galleries.
Mr Bercow shouted ‘not now’ and demanded the SNP chief resume his seat – eventually expelling him for the rest of the day when he refused.
The suspension prompted all SNP MPs to walk out of Commons chamber, pointing and jeering at Tory MPs.
Former Shadow Defence Secretary Lewis has also had his own controversies, including when a video emerged in October last year where he made derogatory comments.
In the footage, taken at an event held by the Jeremy Corbyn-supporting Momentum group, Clive Lewis, the former shadow business secretary, is heard to say: ‘Get on your knees, bitch.’
