‘Summer of Hell’ begins early for commuters at Penn Station

The “Summer of Hell” started before the actual start of summer this year.

The Long Island Rail Road concourse at Penn Station has been without air conditioning during this week’s heat spell, riders say, creating scorching train waiting areas.

“It feels like the descent into hell,” said one rider who declined to give her name. “It’s got to be 100 degrees down here. This is crazy considering how expensive the train tickets are.”

The rider said she made several complaints to both LIRR and Amtrak – which runs Penn Station – only to get told by each that the other was responsible.

Riders crowded around the few fans placed out on the platforms while they waited.

“It’s difficult because I need to wear appropriate work clothes, it’s always stuffy in here, no windows,” said Mimi Jiao, 19. I’ve been here for 45 minutes waiting for my delayed train and I’m just so sweaty.”

Amtrak officials confirmed that the air conditioning has been out and is being “updated.”

“We are in the process of updating the AC in several parts of the station,” said Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams.

LIRR officials did not return calls for comment.
