Two South Carolina boys under the age of 10 will be charged for killing a man with a shotgun, authorities said.
Danny Andrew Smith, 62, was apparently fatally shot as he drove his tractor in a field near Westminster, about an hour west of Greenville, according to local reports.
He was found slumped over in the driver’s seat after the tractor ran into the woods, over an embankment and hit a tree, WSPA-TV reported.
The children, 8 and 9, will be charged with involuntary manslaughter, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
“We believe that both juvenile males discharged a firearm in a reckless manner in the direction of Mr. Smith who was bush hogging on some family property,” Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said in the statement.
It’s unclear which boy actually shot Smith. Police have not identified the kids.
“We don’t think there was any malice,” Crenshaw said. “We don’t think it was a premediated, that their intent was to actually kill Mr. Smith, but when you fire a firearm in the direction of another person, in a reckless manner, than that is considered involuntary manslaughter.”
