Watch disgusting moment COCKROACH infestation takes over 97-year-old OAP's flat – and he can't get rid of them | The Sun

THIS is the disgusting moment a cockroach infestation takes over a 97-year-old OAP's flat.

Tear-jerking footage shows the elderly man, called Michael, fighting a losing battle against the swarming pests as he desperately tries to keep his home clean.

He grips his walking stick as he tries his hardest to rid the cockroaches from his home.

But his efforts are in vain as he is blind in one eye, has mild dementia and is too slow to catch the critters which cover his kitchen surfaces and walls.

A heartbreaking video uploaded to Instagram by pal Steve Reeves shows the 97-year-old – who has no relatives – wiping down his South London housing association home.

The clip – which shows cockroaches swarming all over his microwave, bread bin and doors – details how the infestation is a "long term" problem in his block.

And despite multiple efforts to get landlord Wandle Housing Association to end the insect invasion by mate Steve, nobody is taking him "seriously enough".

Speaking to The Sun Online, Steve, who met Michael at a bus stop and now runs errands with him, shared his disgust at his friend's situation.

He said: "I’m a photographer and met him on the street and took his photo.

"He has mild dementia and is going blind. The poor guy has had an awful life.

"It’s annoying that it takes being ‘social media shamed’ to get them to do anything."

The video, which has been viewed over 4,400 times, sparked fury amongst Instagram users who questioned how an elderly man could be treated so disgustingly.

One user slammed: "Shocking and poor Michael having to live with an infestation of cockroaches

Another hammered: "It’s outrageous that anybody, but especially a man in his 90s, should have to live like this."

While a third simply said: "Come on @wandlehousingassociation you need to sort this out immediately!! A pest controller would clear this up, you can’t put a 97 year old through this."

Steve told The Sun Wandle have since contacted him said they are going to sort the hellish conditions out.

Suzanne Horsley, Executive Director of Customer Services for Wandle Housing association told The Sun Online: “We apologise that this has happened, the health and wellbeing of our customers is our priority.

"We are acting on this immediately and liaising directly with our customer, and are moving him into temporary accommodation today.
