Police carried out a welfare check at the couple's apartment and found Estrella's lifeless body in the bathtub.

Officers found her still wearing the sequined dress she wore to dinner with her family.

Investigators believe that Jimenez and Estrella argued in his car before he stabbed her repeatedly.

Coroners ruled Estrella died from multiple stab wounds and her death was classed as a homicide.

Jimenez was nowhere to be found, his car was missing and there was no sign of forced entry at the apartment.

On May 15, 2012, Jimenez was charged with Estrella's murder and a warrant for his arrest was issued.

A second warrant of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was issued on May 17, 2012.

According to a federal warrant from 2012, Jimenez told his sister he had a bad fight with Estrella and left her bleeding.

He is also alleged to have told a close friend that he was leaving Illinois.

The fugitive reportedly said that law enforcement should be told that he was headed to Mexico if they came looking for him.

The FBI believe Jimenez is hiding in Durango, Mexico.
