A World Health Organization team will travel to China next week to investigate the origins of the novel coronavirus, its director said this week.
During a Monday briefing, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that “knowing the source of this virus is very, very important,” according to CNN.
“We can find the virus better when we know everything about the virus, including how it started,” he added. “We will be sending a team next week to China to prepare for that.”
The visit, he added, will hopefully lead to “understanding how the virus started and what we can do for the future to prepare.”
The United States, the WHO’s largest critic which has said it is cutting ties with the U.N. agency, has called for an investigation into the infection’s origin.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said the virus may have originated in a laboratory; China vehemently denied that it did.
