A WOMAN has died at a beauty spot in Devon after being pulled from the sea on the hottest day of the year. 

The tragedy happened at the popular surfing beach at Croyde, North Devon, at around 10.30am yesterday morning.

Police have confirmed “that a body was located in the water” but said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Coastguards, RNLI crew, police and paramedics raced to the scene at the huge sandy beach but the woman could not be saved.

Eye witnesses said they saw a “lady being pulled from the water”. 

'DISTRESSING'

One told DevonLive: "She was given CPR by someone on the beach.

"I wanted to help as this was extremely distressing. So I decided to walk to the pathway at the top by the car park and stop people walking down, especially those with children as I didn't want them to witness the CPR.

"I just want to say, how quick the lifeguards were there, and the emergency services were as fantastic as usual, in an extremely difficult situation.

"Also incidents like this really bring out the best in people, in this country. Bystanders just doing what they could."

Coastguards said they responded to a person in trouble in the sea and pulled them from the water.

The casualty was handed over to the ambulance crew but died.
