Anna Marie Tendler talks ex husband John Mulaney moving on so fast

John Mulaney’s ex wife Anna Marie Tendler says it’s been ‘totally shocking’ seeing the comedian move on with Olivia Munn… less than a year after their split

Anna Marie Tendler is reflecting on a difficult year that included the end of her marriage to John Mulaney, who has since welcomed a child with girlfriend Olivia Munn.

‘Everything that has transpired has been totally shocking and I think surreal. In a way, I feel like, well, it can only go up from here, because I reached the depth of where I could go,’ she told Harper’s Bazaar.

Tendler and Mulaney’s divorce was finalized on January 6 – six months after the comedian had filed.

They’d officially announced their separation in May after John had completed a 60-day stint at a rehab facility. The 39-year-old comedian been the one to initiate the split.

As for how she’s coped with the swift turn of events in her life, Anna, 36, admitted that she’s ‘had a lot of bad days and medium days.

‘I wouldn’t say I had any good days until the summer.’

She told the outlet that she’s spent a majority of the looming COVID-19 pandemic at the home she and Mulaney had purchased in June 2020 in rural Connecticut.

‘I do miss my friends, and I am aware that I’m maybe a little too young to be living in the middle of the woods by myself. [But] I was able to create the space that, even as a child, I always wanted to live in,’ she explained of her reason to stay.

In an attempt to make the place her own, Anna has since redecorated. But one piece of artwork depicting her French bulldog Petunia will always have a connection to John.

‘This is just a painting of Petunia that someone who was a fan of John’s painted and then gave to him at a show,’ she explained, before being asked by the outlet if it’s artwork John would want back.

‘I don’t think so,’ she replied.

TMZ reported on Thursday, January 6 that Mulaney had officially signed the papers to end his marriage to his wife of seven years.

The end of the couple’s relationship came during a year of huge changes in the former Saturday Night Live writer’s life.

John had entered a 60-day stint at a treatment facility for cocaine addiction and alcoholism in December 2020, Page Six revealed. He completed the program by February.

His separation from Anna went public in mid-May of 2021 and he finally filed for divorce in July in New York.

When news broke of his marriage breakup, Page Six insiders said that John requested a divorce from Anna Marie as early as February.

‘I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,’ she said when the split was announced. ‘I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.’

A few days after their separation was announced, a source claimed to PEOPLE that John had become romantically involved with Olivia Munn.

John went public with Olivia’s pregnancy this September on Late Night With Seth Meyers, whose host had been part of his intervention last year.

He showered praise on Olivia for having ‘dealt with’ his newly sober self and said, ‘She’s kind of held my hand through that hell, and we’re having a baby together.’

During the interview he revealed that the first time he was introduced to Olivia was at Seth’s wedding on Martha’s Vineyard in 2013.

He gushed about their ‘incredible’ new relationship, saying: ‘Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery.’

Their son, Malcom Hiệp, was born in November.

While Munn and Mulaney seem happy with Malcolm, Tendler recently opened up about what she called a ‘harsh and punishing’ year.

‘My own brain is well acquainted with the elusiveness of hope that materializes in sporadic and ephemeral waves. I suppose, in part, this is what it means to live with depression and anxiety,’ the Connecticut-born 36-year-old – who boasts 535K Instagram/TikTok followers – wrote last Friday.

‘That said, melancholia is oft amplified by circumstance and the circumstances of my year have been harsh and punishing. I find myself asking, “When will I feel normal?” But in reality, I recognize that the normal from before has expired; “normal” is an impossibility, there is only “new.”‘

Anna went on to discuss the ‘unfathomable collective loss’ the world has suffered amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of 5.4M people since March 2020.

‘Here’s to all the things we did this year to cope and here’s to all we will do next year to heal,’ Tendler continued.

An infinite history of pain and suffering occurred before this time, yet here we all are, surviving and creating and laughing at TikTok videos. So long 2021. For better or worse I will carry a piece of you with me forever.’
