Naga Munchetty was almost reduced to tears after hearing the experiences of a group of students who had all been cat-called and made to feel unsafe. The BBC Breakfast broadcaster had been researching the issue as part of the annual campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

She lamented: “I feel like crying that women think ‘I’m not going to wear a dress because I don’t want to give the wrong impression.’

“I love clothes. I adore dressing up and I adore feeling good in clothes, and they don’t wear those clothes [because of their fears].

“If you’re single and you want to look your best, why should you try to wear clothes that detract attention from you, rather than saying ‘Hey, I’m fabulous and I’m here’?” she added on her BBC Radio 5 Live show.

The 47-year-old added that while she is constantly mindful of dangers these days, she doesn’t feel it’s something younger women should have to worry about.
