BGT child star Hollie Steel claims ‘song choices are fixed’ and ‘they didn’t want me to win’

Former Britain’s Got Talent child star Hollie Steele has claimed that the hit ITV show’s “song choices are fixed” and that they “didn’t want me to win”.

Hollie stole the hearts of the nation as a sweet ten year old in 2009, when she stunned judge Simon Cowell with her pitch-perfect performance of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom of the Opera.

Her impressive classical singing voice went on to earn her a place in the final, although she didn’t go on to win.

Other impressive acts in the memorable 2009 series of Britain’s Got Talent included father-son duo Stavros Flatley, young singer Shaheen Jafargholi, singer Susan Boyle and the eventual winners, dance group, Diversity.

A now-23 year old Hollie has posted a video to TikTok, which has since gone viral, claiming that BGT bosses didn’t allow her to sing her songs of choice because they “didn’t want me to win”.

Fans of BGT might remember Hollie, as an overwhelmed ten year old, breaking down in tears in the semi-finals of the show, whilst in the middle of performing Eidelweiss from The Sound of Music, which she claimed she “had never heard of before”.

In her TikTok video, which played a clip of the famous video, Hollie explained her side of the story, saying: "I wanted to sing Nessun Dorma, like a massive opera song, like BAM, I'm here.”

The pretty blonde continued: "I knew I could sing it, I said I knew I was strong enough and they [producers] said no.

"They were like 'no you can't sing that' and the only reason why I think they said no – because I was definitely able to sing it – was that they didn't want me to win."

She went on to clarify that it wasn't Britain's Got Talent's fault, saying: “They don't fix it, but the song choices are fixed.

“Like I couldn’t sing a big opera song, erm, so they gave me Eidelweiss, which I’d never heard of before”.

Since her time on the show, Hollie graduated from a London college in 2017 with a diploma in musical theatre and performed the role of Louisa von Trapp in Andrew Lloyd Webber's UK tour of The Sound of Music.

Currently, Hollie is part of a production of Grease on board the luxury cruise ship Harmony of the Seas, where she is playing the iconic Pink Ladies character, Frenchie.
