Britney Spears’ email exchange with the now Prince of Wales, when they were teenagers, has resurfaced. In a throwback interview with talk show host and comic Frank Skinner, the Hit Me Baby One More Time singer revealed she had invited the then Duke of Cambridge out to dinner when she was touring in the UK.

The unearthed interview and comments made by the singer back in 2002 saw the star explain a budding romance between the heir to the throne and the Princess of Pop “didn’t work out”.

A-20-year-old Britney said at the time: “We exchanged emails for a little bit and he was supposed to come and see me somewhere but it didn’t work out.”

”You were blown out by Prince William?” asked Frank, as Britney replied, “Yeah.”

Having had no idea why the young royal changed his mind about going for dinner with the Toxic hitmaker, it was reported by The Sun the prince had decided to go fox hunting instead.

Prince William’s borderline rejection did not keep the star down for long, as Britney went on to date NSYNC singer Justin Timberlake.

Rumours about their cyber romance had always been denied by Buckingham Palace but in September last year, royal biographer Christopher Andersen shared even more details of Britney and William’s alleged online relationship.

When writing his book Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Meghan, Christopher claimed: “[William and Spears] tried to get together back when they were young.”

“There may have been phone conversations, but I don’t recall that they ever actually managed to get together during that period,” he added, confirming that the two never went for the alleged dinner date.

A year after the speculated romance between the Brit and the American, Prince William publicly announced that he was dating his now-wife Kate Middleton, who most recently gained the title the Princess of Wales.

The public were instantly obsessed with the new royal couple, while over in Hollywood, Britney and Justin announced that they had ended their relationship at the end of 2002.

Admitting that she was “heartbroken” that the relationship with the Cry Me A River singer had ended, in a statement published following the release of 2021 documentary Framing Britney Spears, which explored how Justin’s behaviour after their breakup led to further speculation that Britney cheated on him, the singer said she does not hold a grudge against him.

At the time, an insider shared: “She feels that they were young and in love and both did stupid things when they were together.

“She was heartbroken when they separated, but it’s not something she dwells on now. She’s happy and happy for him.”

Britney went on to have a number of relationships following her split with Justin.

The star briefly married Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004, before announcing her engagement to backup dancer Kevin Federline that same year.

The pair got married in September of that year and later welcomed son Sean Preston in September 2005 and Jayden the following year before the former couple divorced in 2007.

Following her split from Kevin, Britney was placed under the infamous conservatorship in February 2008 and later started dating now-husband Sam Asghari after meeting on the set of the music video for her 2016 hit “Slumber Party”.

The pair finally tied the knot in June 2022 in an intimate ceremony and wedding reception where Britney danced with famous faces including Madonna.

Things weren’t all plain sailing for Prince William and Kate either as in 2007 the pair briefly broke up.

During their time apart, Kate went to Ireland and while she was unhappy about their status at the time, she later said that the split was good for both of them.

“You can get consumed by a relationship when you’re younger and I really valued that time for me as well, although I didn’t think it at the time,” Kate said during her engagement interview in 2010 with ITV News.

Their break-up, however, was short-lived and the couple reconciled a few months later. Kate was seen attending a Princess Diana tribute concert with her sister, Pippa, and sat just two rows behind Prince William.
