‘He’s not a choirboy’: Captain America writers crush fan theories that the Marvel hero is ‘a virgin’

The writers of the three Captain America movies, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely just dismissed fan theories that the superhero has never had sex.

The duo dished about the Marvel character’s personal life during an interview with Yahoo.

Noting that the Captain was not as innocent as many fans want to think, McFeely, 51, wondered: ‘Why do people think he’s a virgin?’

He expressed disbelief, saying: ‘I think he loses his virginity!’

The screenwriter said the character’s looks and charm would have likely garnered him the attraction of countless fans.

‘If you look like that, and you’re going to city to city, and you’re signing autographs for the likes of the ladies that he’s signing the autographs for, I’ve got to imagine that [he lost his virginity],’ he said.

Markus, 51, also noted that the superhero’s clean-cut appearance did not mean that his personal life was devoid of intimate entanglements.

‘Steve Rogers isn’t a prude. He may be occasionally presented that way. 

‘He’s a guy that believes in right and wrong and all these things, but he’s not a choirboy. He’s a World War II veteran,’ he expressed.

The screenwriters also discussed the early stages of development on the original 2011 feature, and Markus noted that the prospect of creating a period-accurate film was particularly interesting.

He recalled that the project ‘started with a theoretical conversation, before Marvel was even making movies, where we said, “Wouldn’t it be neat to make a comic book movie starring a superhero at the time when they were actually created?”‘

The screenwriter discussed Evans’ commitment to the role and recalled that the 40-year-old performer was a good fit for the role. 

‘He was very conscious of not wanting snark. It was a very good understanding of Captain America, which is that if this guy’s going to fly as a character and as an authority figure…he’s got to have the gravity right away,’ Markus said. 

The entertainment industry figure also pointed out that the actor ‘may have taken a joke or two out’ of the original flick’s script.

The first modern picture to feature the character was 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, which served as one of the earliest entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The superhero had previously been the focus of a 1944 movie serial as well as a 1990 film that starred Matt Salinger.

The 2011 feature was met with a generally positive critical response, with praise going to the flick’s setting and Evans’ performance.

The movie was followed by two sequels entitled Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, which were released in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

Keeping it going: The character was also the focus of two other features, and Evans reprised his role in various other MCU-related films; he is seen with Elizabeth Olsen and Sebastian Stan in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War

Evans also portrayed the character in numerous other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most notably in the Avengers films.

The performer ceased playing Captain America after appearing in Avengers: Endgame, although he has reportedly debated taking up the superhero’s mantle since then.

The character’s title was later taken up by Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon, who is currently portrayed by Anthony Mackie.
