Denise Richards feels remorse about about a recent selfie she posted to social media while on an aircraft without a mask.

On Sunday, in an Instagram Stories post, Richards, 50, was seen going without a mask as she said she was ‘on a jet plane,’ adding, ‘Anyone that is upset I [am] not wearing a mask I’m hiding under a hoody [and] a huge winter coat.’

She said that the clothes she was wearing was ‘thicker than any mask.’

An insider told People on Tuesday the 50-year-old actress ‘realized it wasn’t the right thing to do to post the picture,’ and that she was not trying to send any message with the social media shot.

‘She believes in masks, and she really does follow the rules,’ the source told the outlet, adding that The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum ‘wore her mask the entire time except when she was taking sips of water.’

A separate source told the publication that Richards ‘not one of those people who is anti-masks,’ and that ‘she’s ready to admit she was an idiot to post the photo!’

The source said that ‘the way she handled’ the situation ‘was strange, posting the photo’ on social media, where misconceptions could arise.

Richards was seen at an event in Madrid, Spain in January of 2020 

The source described the circumstances of the situation that led to the criticized selfie.

‘She was just flying home, sitting in her seat, and she put a coat over her head… you’re allowed to take a sip of water and pull your mask down,’ the source told People. ‘So when she took her mask down, took it off for a second to relax and drink water, she posted this thing “I hope nobody’s upset” and she thought it was tongue-in-cheek. But people did not think it was funny.’

One user wrote, ‘You better be on hiatus or fired for subjecting others to breaking protocol. Your germ infested coat is not a damn mask.’

Another said, ‘Wear a mask please. Private businesses have a right to set rules.’

One person referenced Richards’ spouse Aaron Phypers, an engineer, asking, ‘Do you think aaron has told denise richards what the cure for covid is yet or is he keeping that to himself for now.’

CDC guidelines currently recommend that people on planes keep their masks over the mouth and nose.
