‘This is actually quite naughty!’: Denise Van Outen admits she tricked F1 driver Eddie Irvine into thinking he was taking her out for dinner

Denise Van Outen recalled a funny April Fool’s prank she played on Eddie Irvine during her Steph’s Packed Lunch appearance on Monday. 

The 47-year-old TV personality recalled how she tricked the former F1 driver, 56, into thinking he was taking her out on a date.

She began: ‘A very famous Formula One driver, this was a few years ago… Eddie Irvine. He was a bit of a one with ladies and thought every woman he met fancied him.

‘He kept asking me out when I lived in Los Angeles. I thought, “right, I’m just going to pretend I’m going to meet him for a date.” He was living in New York and I was in LA – this is actually quite naughty!’

Explaining what happened, Denise continued: ‘He booked a restaurant and I said, “yeah I’ll be there.” I had a friend in New York and I said, “please go to the restaurant so I know he’s there.” She messaged me and said, “he’s here, he’s sat at the table.” He was sat there for ages.

The Northern Irish racing driver quizzed her on her whereabouts, to which she replied, ‘I’m stuck in traffic’ – and that she would be ‘about five hours’ because she was in LA.

It comes after the Loose Women panellist announced she had broken up with partner-of-seven-years Eddie Boxshall on January 7, after he was reportedly caught having phone sex with other women.   

According to reports, Eddie is ‘desperate’ to win Denise back.

A newly unearthed interview though has revealed Denise and Eddie’s relationship was struggling a year before they split.

Speaking on their podcast Before We Say I Do in February 2021, Eddie admitted he was getting frustrated by Denise’s ‘flirty banter’ at work. At the time the star was competing on Dancing On Ice.

‘It gives me the hump. Start ­chucking it a bit in my direction,’ Eddie said as the couple attended a psychosexual therapy session. Denise had previously admitted on the podcast that she loved to flirts with others.

‘I don’t flirt with him,’ she admitted, referring to Eddie. ‘I flirt with everyone at work, I’m naturally flirty. It’s flanter – flirty banter. I don’t mean anything by it.’

In the candid discussion the former couple admitted the pandemic had put a strain on their seven year relationship, as they admitted ‘We’ve been locked down together 24/7 and a few things have come up. If we try and sit down and talk about things, we’ll end up bickering.’

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays at 12.30pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
