Ewan McGregor reveals daughter Esther auditioned on her own for role in his Obi-Wan Kenobi series

Ewan McGregor revealed that his daughter Esther auditioned on her own for her role in his Obi-Wan Kenobi series while promoting it on Wednesday on a talk show.

The 51-year-old Scottish actor while promoting the Disney+ series on The Late Late Show With James Corden said he didn’t pull any strings as the star and an executive producer of the series for his actress daughter Esther, 20.  

‘I’m sure everybody thinks she got the job because of me, but really she didn’t,’ Ewan said. ‘She auditioned for the role.’

Ewan said that it was the director of the Disney+ series who came to tell him about Esther and not the other way around.

‘Deb, the brilliant director said to me ”I found this great girl but she turns out to be your daughter. Are you happy with that?”,’ Ewan said. ‘I said that would be amazing.’

‘She was just brilliant,’ Ewan said. ‘You don’t really know with your kids until that moment when I was acting with her and it felt really normal and natural.’

Ewan said that his 26-year-old daughter Clara was also an actor and that they did a movie together.

‘Clara, she got together with a great writer, Ruby, and wrote a film sort of about me and her and our experience over the last five years and Clara’s experience with addiction’ Ewan said. She wrote this film where we both play father daughter.’

‘It was the most extraordinary situation to be in,’ Ewan said. ‘ It was very personal and beautiful.’

James asked Ewan if it was true that both his parents were teachers but that he dropped out of their school when he was 16.

‘I went to the school that my dad taught at,’ Ewan said. ‘I hated it really.’

Ewan shared that he wasn’t allowed to do both music and art at school.

‘Those were the only two things I was interested in,’ Ewan said. ‘I got fed up, I kept getting sent to the deputy headmaster, this lovely man Charlie Thompson, and it became almost like a weekly occurrence. I would go into his office and he would be like ”what have you done now” and we would have a cup of tea. I think he looked forward to it to be honest.’

Ewan said his parents sat him down when he was barely 16.

‘They said we have spoken about and if you want to leave school you should leave school,’ Ewan said. ‘ I was out. I never went back.’

‘It was an amazingly brave thing to do,’ Ewan said.

James pointed out that Ewan’s uncle Denis Lawson was in the first three Star Wars movies and played a rebel fighter. James said that must have had a huge impact on him.

‘He’d done it,’ Ewan said. ‘I come from a tiny town called Crieff in Scotland. It’s a beautiful place but it’s not the hotbed of acting talent.’

‘He made it a possibility for me, but I wonder if he hadn’t been an actor would I still have wanted to do it,’ Ewan said. ‘I hope so.’

Ewan also said during the filming of the series for Disney+ that he developed a close bond with a camel called Silus.

‘In the original films, I literally wrote a gym horse that was painted blue,’ Ewan said.

 ‘This time I had a real camel called Silus and a trainer called Titus. He was a lovely man and he called me a cowboy all the time which I really liked. As a Scotsman we don’t get called cowboys a lot,’ he said chuckling.

Ewan said he considered adopting the camel, who was retiring, but that he had a small child and thought that he had enough on his plate at the time.
