ITV Loose Women star’s husband left ‘blind’ and ‘disorientated’ after stroke

Loose Women star Gloria Hunniford opened up about her husband's recent medical drama while visiting the Chelsea Flower Show and revealed he had been left blind in his right eye.

Gloria, 83, attended the flower show with her husband Stephen Wray just four weeks after he suffered from a stroke which left him partially blind in his right eye.

Stephen, who has previously suffered from a stroke, told The Mirror: “I woke up in the morning and there was blood in the eye and that was it. I can see a little but not that good.”

He admitted that the vision in his eye was not expected to return before saying: “It is from the heart to the eye, and then from the eye to the brain, so it is damaged. It is the first time I have had something like this with the eye.

“I had to go to hospital – then Northfield [Hospital] and then neurology but thankfully it was not a long wait at A&E. I just went straight through. I am coping OK with it all. It’s fine but just disorientating.”

In 2020 the Loose Women star praised the NHS for saving Stephens' life as he was involved in a taxi accident the year prior which left the base of his spine fractured.

Stephen also suffered from a heart attack in 2004 and he had his first stroke when he was doing some gardening in 2012. He was then rushed to the hospital where he was treated.

Gloria previously recalled her experience when her husband had his first stroke and that he was in the garden and told her something was the matter with his left arm and described it as "cotton wool" and that "he had no control over it".

The Loose Women star said she was in "shock" when she first saw him and that it was the first time she had ever seen somebody having a stroke.

She recalled being "so deeply affected" by what she had seen and that her husband wasn't able to move or speak properly, however his "fighting spirit" was there.

Stephens's second stroke followed after Gloria opened up about her own health last month and revealed that she was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with kidney stones at the end of 2022.

Speaking to The Mirror, she said she felt like somebody has "put a tap" in her body and "just drained all the energy". Gloria was later informed by doctors that she had sepsis of the kidney.

Describing her experience, she said “Thankfully" it hadn’t gone beyond the kidney to other areas but she said that she still felt unwell and that it flattened her during that time.

Gloria slowly began to recover but did lose her appetite and suffered from low energy despite mainly resting and sleeping.

She praised her husband Stephen Way, branding him "marvellous" during her recovery.

Gloria said that at the time she would set herself little tasks and that her husband was "chief cook" and "bottle-washer" as her whole family rallied around her to offer their support.
