Jeopardy! fans grouse over Mayim Bialik's extended hosting stint

Jeopardy! fans grouse over Mayim Bialik’s extended hosting stint as quiz show’s spring and summer schedule is announced

A number of Jeopardy! fans took to social media to react to the show’s announcement of its spring and summer scheduling, some critical of part-time host Mayim Bialik while partial to Ken Jennings.

On Monday, the show’s producer Sarah Foss said on the podcast Inside Jeopardy! that Jennings, 48, ‘will be back on March 10, and then he will continue the rest of his syndicated run, which will take us through April 28.’

From that point, Foss said, Bialik, 47, ‘will take over on May 1, and she’ll take us all the way through the summer.’

A number of fans of the show took to Twitter to criticize Bialik’s performance in hosting the TV stalwart.

‘Jeopardy, stop trying to make Mayim happen. It’s not going to happen,’ one person said.

One person asked: ‘How is it possible that Mayim Bialik just keeps getting worse and worse at hosting jeopardy?’ while another questioned why it takes her ‘so long to confirm an answer?’

Said one fan: ‘I’m just getting back into @Jeopardy after a long break since the death of Alex Trebek. I wish they’d give Ken Jennings the permanent position. Mayim Bialik is out of her depth.’

Another called Bialik ‘unwatchable as Jeopardy host,’ adding, ‘So many quirks and odd mannerisms. I’ll watch again when Ken Jennings comes back.’

Some fans defended Bialik in her capacity as host of the show, with one fan saying that ‘the controversy seems contrived.’

Said another fan: ‘Mayim does a great job hosting. Some folks just can’t deal with a woman hosting a game show. I look forward to the Mayim shows.’

One fan said that Bialik should host Celebrity Jeopardy! while Jennings hosts the syndicated edition.

‘Can we for the love of god just have Mayim host Celebrity Jeopardy!’ the person said. ‘One of the contestants even admitted that her pacing and the way she reads the clues is just plain bad. There’s literally no reason why she should be hosting syndicated.’

Bialik recently wrapped up hosting a primetime run of Celebrity Jeopardy! earlier this month, and is also presiding over the show’s High School Reunion Tournament, which concludes March 9.

The collegiate competition consists of 27 contestants who have previously competed on teen tournaments in the series.

Jennings is slated to pick up the hosting duties for the shows that air March 10-April 28, and is not expected to host any of the show’s syndicated episodes prior to next fall.

He is also scheduled to host the primetime show Jeopardy! Masters, which will pit six former champions on the show against one another. The series debut has not yet been revealed.

Following the passing of beloved host Alex Trebek at 80 in November 2020 of pancreatic cancer, Bialik and Jennings were named as the cohosts of the long-running series in July of 2022.

The search for a replacement saw an extended series of guest hosts that included LeVar Burton, Robin Roberts, Savannah Guthrie, George Stephanopoulos, Aaron Rodgers, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Anderson Cooper and Dr. Mehmet Oz, among others.

The show’s producer Mike Richards was named producer but departed amid scandal in 2021 over past remarks he made on his podcast.

Bialik and Jennings have shared the job in the time since.
