Jojo Siwa spotted in LA following controversy over her not liking the word lesbian: ‘It wasn’t meant to be anything bad’

Jojo Siwa on Sunday was spotted in Los Angeles following a minor controversy over her opinion of the term lesbian, saying that her initial comments weren’t ‘meant to be anything bad.’

The 19-year-old YouTube star wore a white top with rainbow patterns over black shorts with red Converse Chuck Taylor high tops. She had her blonde locks tied up and carried a water bottle with a Gucci backpack on the weekend outing in Southern California.

The Omaha, Nebraska native made headlines when speaking with Yahoo! Life July 25, when she said she wasn’t a fan of the word lesbian.

‘I don’t like the word itself,’ Siwa said. ‘It’s just, like “lesbian,” it’s just like a lot … at the end of the day, that’s what I am.’

In the interview, Siwa also gave her opinion on misconceptions when it comes to gender identity and sexuality.

‘You can be queer and be girly,’ she said. ‘I think that’s a thing, is a lot of times lesbians are taken to be masculine. If you’re a lesbian, you’re supposed to be, “Do you want to be a boy?” That’s not the case. There are plenty of very feminine lesbians.’

Following a number of responses on social media, the Dance Moms alum took to TikTok Friday to clarify her thoughts on the word, saying it was ‘not a word that I am ashamed of saying or ashamed of identifying as by any means.

The Dance Moms alum was in a good mood as she exited her vehicle on the summer day 

‘I never said that lesbian was a dirty word and I never, ever would say that it’s a dirty word because it is not,’ Siwa said. ‘It is not a bad word … whenever someone talks to me about my sexuality, I just say that I’m gay. I don’t hate the word lesbian … it’s not the word that flows off the tongue for me, if that makes sense.’

On Sunday, Siwa again broached the topic, as she said she is ‘proud to identify with’ the word lesbian and it is a part of her life, adding that ‘it wasn’t meant to be anything bad.’

She said that her use of the word comes down to her language preferences, as ‘it’s easier to for [her] to say that [she’s] gay.

‘I don’t say the word lesbian because it’s a lot for me to say, but it doesn’t mean anything for me besides just a mouthful.’

Siwa last year came out at LGBTQ, telling People of the terminology she prefers to use, ‘I don’t know, bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, straight. I always just say gay because it just kind of covers it or queer because I think the keyword is cool.

‘I like queer. Technically I would say that I am pansexual because that’s how I have always been my whole life is just like, my human is my human.’
