Megan Barton Hanson warns readers surgery doesn't help confidence

‘Surgery didn’t help me love myself’: Megan Barton Hanson details having her first cosmetic procedure aged 17 after being bullied about her looks but tells fans ‘you can’t please everyone’

Megan Barton Hanson has detailed her experience undergoing her first cosmetic procedure when she was just 17.

The Love Island star, 26, said that as a teenager she decided to have her ears pinned back after being cruelly bullied about her looks, but went onto tell her fans she’s since realised you ‘can’t please everyone.’

Megan, who has openly spoken about her history with lip and facial fillers, urged her fans to think hard about whether they are having surgery for the right reasons, adding it ‘didn’t help her to love herself.’

Speaking to The Sun, Megan explained she first had her ears pinned back when she was 17 years old in the hope it would boost her confidence and help her to overcome her insecurities.

But in reality, the star said it led her to have more procedures, including lip fillers, rhinoplasty and a breast enlargement.

She said: ‘The surgery helped me diminish the obsessive nature of my insecurities, but while it made me feel happier when looking in the mirror, that’s just surface level.

‘It didn’t help me to love myself, that came from growing up and having a strong circle of empowered women around me.’

Megan went onto admit that late last year she decided to have her lip fillers dissolved and the clips in her ears removed, and has since embraced her appearance.

The reality star urged her fans to think long and hard about undergoing any surgical procedures, insisting it won’t be a quick fix for anyone struggling with insecurities.

She added: ‘Surgery is not something that can make you love yourself. You can’t please everyone, so it must be done for you and you only.’

Last year Megan herself revealed she’d given up having plastic surgery after having her lip fillers dissolved.

She told MailOnline: ‘To be honest, all I get these days is Botox – I haven’t had my lips done since a year before the villa.

‘Where I got it all done at a young age, it’s easily maintained, filler lasts longer, I just have preventative Botox here and there but other than that I don’t really get anything else done. I am really happy with the way I look.’

Megan believes former Islanders, who are now reversing the work they’ve had done, made rushed decisions after finding fame on the show – and now regret it.

In 2019, Megan also spoke of her plastic surgery during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, urging her young fans to seek therapy rather than opt for drastic cosmetic measures to improve their looks.

The Love Island star told hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard she thought getting ‘bigger boobs and a smaller nose’ at the age of 19 would make her feel more content, but she now realises true confidence comes from within.
