Nicola Roberts says ‘waterfalls will flow’ for late pal Sarah Harding at charity run

Nicola Roberts says “waterfalls” will flow for her late bandmate Sarah Harding at a charity run that is being held in her memory.

Sarah, who was a member of Girls Aloud, tragically died last September, aged 39, following her breast cancer battle amid the Covid-19 breakout in 2020. The singer fought bravely against the disease, undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy, but sadly succumbed to her illness last year.

Speaking on Tuesday 19 July 19 on BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola reflected on the "daily challenge" of grieving the loss of their friend ahead of the upcoming charity run on Sunday in London’s Hyde Park.

Nicola said: “I think life is very good at like just keeping you going and you race through your day and get to your next thing. But I think that when you actually take a moment like Sunday to come together and purposely focusing on it, that’s kind of when the waterfalls an all.

Kimberly added: “You do need to do it, you do.

“Grief is something that you have to go through and having each other helps massively – and reminiscing. This is just gonna be a really special moment for all of us.

“She was a firework, she really was,” Nicola chimed. “And your electric girl – absolutely sums up what she was. Electricity,” Kimberly added.

“When she was plugged in, don't go near it,” Nicola giggled while Kimberly said: “there’s nothing like her and I do love it when we chat about her and suddenly all those memories come flushing back and it’s amazing."

The former Girls Aloud members said alongside Race For Live, there could be other planned events set to take place.

“I mean ultimately the goal is to carry on her name and like do her justice but then ultimately like raise as much money as possible. And then in regards to the research element, just trying to work with the doctor really and figure out what that is for those women who are being diagnosed even younger these days,” Nicola added.

The former girl band will be taking part in a 5km event this Sunday 24 July 24 in London, named the Race For Life For Sarah, which aims to celebrate Harding’s life as well as raise money for breast cancer.

Nicola will run alongside Cheryl and Nadine Coyle in Hyde Park while Kimberley will take part remotely as she explained she is out of London over the weekend. She said that raising money for cancer research was one of Harding’s final wishes and she feels this is "going to be a really special moment" for the group, Manchester Evening News reports.

She added: "I’m kind of looking forward to feeling a little bit closer to her in that moment. I know that sounds strange but there are these moments that happen still where I suddenly just feel close to her again and I just love that and I cherish those moments."
