Let’s talk about the best moment of the 2021 Golden Globes: Jason Sudeikis winning the award for Best Actor in TV Comedy for Ted Lasso, on Zoom, in the U.K. (where it was around 3:00 AM), wearing a tie-dye sweatshirt. There were some very funny reactions to Sudeikis’ low key vibes as he accepted the award for his role in the the newly-released and quickly-embraced Apple TV+ sports comedy, but the majority of the attention landed on that colorful hoodie.
It turns out that he had a pretty good reason for wearing it. Sudeikis explained in a post-show Q+A that it represents Forward_Space, a workout and dance company based in New York City and owned by his sister Kristin Sudeikis. “It’s my sister’s dance and workout place in New York,” he said. “But I believe in the product of this nice hoodie as much as the message.”
But after Sudeikis explained that he was wearing the sweatshirt to shine some light on his sister’s NYC company, a bit of an awkward miscommunication led to someone questioning whether the sweatshirt was a piece of “product placement.”
“Oh, it’s not that. It’s family pride. It’s my sister’s company.” he said. “I don’t know if you have siblings, but when they do something that you believe in, you encourage them to do it, and you don’t refer to it as product placement. We do use a lot of Apple products in our show—maybe that’s what you’re confusing.”
The Q+A followed Sudeikis’ mid-show win, which even outside of the major Zoom/quarantine vibes also made for meme fodder because he so clearly was not expecting to win. His speech sort of stumbled over itself a few times, so much so that its meandering nature at one point led fellow nominee (and Sudeikis’ fellow Kansas City native) Don Cheadle to gave a big ol’ ‘wrap it up’ gesture. He confirmed as such in that post-show Q+A session: his surprise was 100% legitimate.”Despite the accolade, I’m not a good enough actor to pretend that well,” he said.
