Oprah reveals that she had a wardrobe crisis and had to change her outfit at the last minute before interviewing Adele for her One Night Only special

Oprah Winfrey revealed Friday that she was in a rush to change her outfit at the last minute before filming her interview for Adele One Night Only.

The 67-year-old TV legend shared Friday on Oprah Daily that she had originally planned to wear a vibrant apricot suit for her sit down with the 33-year-old pop superstar.

But after learning that Adele was ditching colors for a neutral-toned suit, Oprah feared she be left standing out like a ‘peacock.’

‘I was so excited to meet Adele for the first time,’ Oprah said, before adding that she wanted to wear ‘something special’ for the interview, which was conducted outdoors in her rose garden.

Even though she had ‘a closet full of clothes and [hadn’t] been anywhere in two years,’ she initially wanted a colorful outfit to match the flowers in the background.

‘In early 2020, Jennifer Lopez was wearing a Sally LaPointe suit when she joined my 2020 Vision tour in Los Angeles,’ the Color Purple actress explained. 

‘Gayle [King] and I loved it so much. So I called Sally’s team and we talked about doing something in an apricot color.’

Clash: But two weeks later she learned Adele would wear a gorgeous white suit, and she feared her outfit would make her look like a ‘parrot’

But the suit Oprah was formerly so excited about started to seem out of place once she got word of what Adele would have on.

‘Two weeks later, I was sent a picture of what Adele would be wearing. It was a beautiful white suit by Christopher John Rogers,’ she continued.

‘I thought, Whoa, I’m going to look like a parrot next to her.’

Oprah conferenced with her longtime friend Gayle, though their differing tastes prevented them from reaching common ground. 

‘I even had a conversation with Gayle about it. I said, “Oh my God, everybody went to the trouble to get this suit made, and now she’s going to be in a neutral color. I don’t want to stand out like a peacock,”‘ she recounted.

‘Of course Gayle said, “I love being a peacock.” But, listen, I certainly do not love being a peacock.

Neutral colors also seemed like a more fitting choice for the talk show host, as they are her ”go-to in everyday life.’

Back in action? She still wore a navy Sally LaPointe suit to introduce Adele’s concert, and she teased that the apricot number might reappear in the future

Luckily, Oprah had everything she need for the perfect counterpoint to Adele hidden away in her closet.

‘I went to my closet to look for something more subdued and came up with a Brunello Cuccinelli jumpsuit with a cream-colored jacket,’ she said. 

‘When I walked in and met her for the first time, I was so glad I’d listened to that little whisper and gone with my gut. I had fretted so much, but it was the right choice for me,’ Oprah added.

To better complement the muted color scheme, she had the film crew covered up all of the covered roses, only leaving the white ones to pop against their suits.

Oprah was still certain she ‘would have looked like a peacock for sure,’ but she thought the ‘neutral suits looked perfect together.’ 

When it came time to introduce Adele’s concert, Oprah still got to wear a Sally LaPointe suit, those this time it was a navy shade with eye-catching feathers on the sleeves.

‘Oh, and keep an eye out for the apricot suit,’ she teased. ‘It may just make an appearance one day.’

Oprah and Adele will sit down as part of the singer’s CBS special Adele One Night Only, which airs on Sunday, November 14 at 8:30 p.m. ET and 8:00 p.m. PT.

The special will premiere just days before Adele drops her highly anticipated album 30 on November 19.

In a teaser for the interview, Adele delved into writing her emotional song Hold On after Oprah called it ‘brutally honest.’

”Girl you can write! So what was going on there what was happening?’ she asked.

According to the singer, the title came from a phrase her friends often used with her in darker moments. 

‘My friends would always say ‘hold on’ when I felt like those lyrics in the verse. It was just exhausting trying to keep going with it,’ she said.

‘It’s a process the divorce, the process of being a single parent, the process of not seeing your child every single day wasn’t really the plan that I had when I became a mum.’

The special also features an intimate performance from Adele filmed at Los Angeles’ Griffith Observatory, high above the city.
