Rod Stewart sheds a tear in Chris Evans’ back garden

Chris Evans reveals Rod Stewart shed tear during rehearsals

Sir Rod Stewart could not contain his emotions after the rocker was in tears during rehearsals while performing a song dedicated to his dad during a special event held at Chris Evans house.

The iconic singer performed live to 52 couples who raised an incredible £1,737,441.04 for UK Children’s charities in an auction.

Speaking on Virgin Radio, Chris revealed he was left taken aback when he spotted Rod, 78, on stage looking tearful as he addressed the event on Monday.

He said: “Rod shed a tear in rehearsals when he was in soundcheck for one particular song, which always makes him cry, as it reminds him of his dad.”

The radio presenter said his youngest son Walt was in awe of the musician who he mistakenly called “Rob”.

Chris continued: “There’s a picture on Instagram and it’s the last picture I posted so it will be straight up there when you have a look at my feed.

“It’s my little Walt, who is four, and he loves music. I mean, he really loves music. He writes his own songs already. I’m not saying he’s any good at all or that he will do music but he loves it.

“There is a picture of him standing in front of Rod in the afternoon while Rod is in sound check. [Walt] is just looking up at him like a God.”

The broadcaster added: “He cried again, Rod, when he did the song again – I was right by the side of the stage and one of his backing dancers wiped a tear from her eye and pointed to Rod and said, ‘He’s crying.'”

Last year, Rod released a heartfelt music video dedicated to his father for the single Touchline.

The track and video are a dedication to his Edinburgh-born father’s life, speaking beautifully of his love for football, his eventual death and watching over him and his family forever.

Rod’s father Robert died in 1990 and the song is a tribute to how supportive he was of his son’s footballing ambitions.

A video of Chris’ event is on Virgin Radio UK’s YouTube page and shares an insight into what the lucky attendees got to experience at the weekend.

Rod’s wife Penny Lancaster was also in attendance as she revealed that the Dine & Disco coincided with the celeb couple’s wedding anniversary.

Penny said to Rod, “If we actually do stay together, on our 16th anniversary, I want to spend it with 52 couples we’ve never met before!”

As well as Rod’s appearance, the event also featured delicious Michelin-starred food from the likes of Tom Kerridge, Atul Kochhar and Jose Pizaro.

There was also a performance from Beverley Knight, and appearances from Russell Brand, Rob Brydon and talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil.
