Sam Smith wore a long, black dress on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday and discussed changing lyrics for a recent White House performance.

The 30-year-old English singer-songwriter performed in December at a White House ceremony as President Joe Biden signed the Respect For Marriage Act into law.

‘You sang Stay With Me, which I love, but you changed some of the lyrics?,’ Jimmy said.

‘Yeah, I did,’ confirmed Sam, who accessorized with dangling earrings and a necklace.

‘What lyrics did you change?,’ Jimmy asked.

‘It’s a lonely song about one night stands, so I decided…,’ Sam said as the studio audience erupted into laughter.

‘Is it?,’ Jimmy said.

‘Yeah, it is. It’s pretty depressing,’ Sam said.

‘I always sing it happy,’ Jimmy said.

‘But I changed it to, like, be a love song. And it was really beautiful. And there’s certain lyrics I’m going to keep forever,’ Sam said.

Sam gushed about meeting Biden, 80, and Vice President Kamala Harris, 58, as Jimmy showed a photo of the non-binary singer posing with the politicians.

‘He’s fabulous. They’re all great. Kamala loved my handbag, which I was very happy with,’ Sam said. ‘They were all very sweet and kind to me and everyone, my band, loved them. It was a beautiful day.’

The London native’s fourth studio album Gloria will be released on January 27.

Sam and German singer Kim Petras, 30, released Unholy last September as the second single from Gloria.

Unholy topped the charts in the UK and US and was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the upcoming 65th annual Grammy Awards.

Sam told Jimmy that another single will be released before the album comes out.

Aubrey Plaza, 38, will host the upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live that will feature Sam as musical guest.
